Description
Hajime Aoyagi attends Sohoku High School as a member of its Bicycle Racing Club, serving as vice captain in his second year. Initially sporting short, straight brown hair covering one eye, his hair grows to shoulder-length dark blond by his third year. His eyes appear gold or blue in the manga, while the anime initially depicts them as undetailed black before later showing brown. Clothing featuring exclamation marks is a frequent choice.
On their first day at Sohoku, Junta Teshima observes Aoyagi riding his road racer up the school's entrance slope and initiates a conversation. Bonding over their shared status as "average" cyclists, they join the bicycle club together and are both placed in class 1-4. Failing to qualify for the 40th Summer Inter High team, witnessing the event firsthand spurs Teshima's frustration about their limitations. Aoyagi responds by suggesting transforming "one" into "two," proposing they race as a dedicated pair. This partnership defines their dynamic: Teshima devises strategies while Aoyagi executes them as the primary rider.
Initially gloomy and reserved, Aoyagi speaks minimally but demonstrates deep loyalty to teammates. He forms close bonds with Teshima, mentor Jin Tadokoro, and later third-year Kimitaka Koga. His personality gradually opens up, notably in his third year when he refers to the team as a "six-man-team" and mentors first-year sprinter Issa Kaburagi via written notes on cycling techniques. His interests include touring art galleries, drawing scenery (having scored perfect art grades in middle school), eating plum rice balls and cabbage, and playing DS games.
Athletically, Aoyagi starts as a moderately strong but unexceptional cyclist. After exclusion from the 41st Inter High team, he and Teshima intensify training, significantly developing their leg muscles. As vice captain in their second year, they win a sprint race against first-years through brute force. By his third year, Aoyagi specializes as a sprinter, emulating Tadokoro's style. He develops signature techniques: the **"Supersonic Oxygen Human Bullet Aoyagi Train"**, involving deep inhalation to expand his torso for explosive speed bursts primarily used for pulling teammates; the **"Bambi Style"**, concentrating energy in his thighs for high cadence and rapid cornering acceleration sustainable under 150 meters; and the **"Fake Launch"**, masking Teshima's climbing weaknesses by accelerating behind him to create a decoy sprint impression. His endurance advances markedly, demonstrated during the Inter High when he retrieves Kaburagi after a crash, pulls Teshima from the rear pack, and supports Sohoku with an injured knee until Hakone.
Notable achievements include winning five pre-series Chiba Prefecture rookie road races and placing third in the Bay Coast Criterium Race as a first-year. In his second year, he finishes fifth in the 42nd Inter High qualifiers. His surname Aoyagi combines "blue/green" (青), "eight" (八), and "tree" (木), while his given name Hajime means "one" (一).
