Description
Sakamichi Onoda attends Sohoku High School intending to join the anime club, only to find it dissolved from lack of members. He attempts recruiting through flyer distribution, facing social obstacles and intimidation from athletic students. Starting in fourth grade, he rode a heavy "mommy bike," later modified by his mother with a smaller gear during middle school, unknowingly intensifying his pedaling. His weekly 90-kilometer round trip to Akihabara for anime merchandise, combined with an improperly adjusted saddle during growth phases, inadvertently cultivated exceptional leg strength and climbing stamina.

Onoda possesses straight, slightly spiky black hair and round blue eyes in anime, though manga depicts brown eyes. Average in height with a generally frail build, his leg muscles stand out prominently. Early judgments rated his appearance below average, but later remarks highlighted his "nice eyes." By his second year, peers unexpectedly called him "cute," surprising both him and others. His initial cycling gear featured jackets and jerseys in Sohoku’s colors: yellow, white, and red.

Introverted and socially awkward, Onoda initially distrusts athletic individuals. As an anime enthusiast, his passion surfaces in overwhelming question-filled discussions about anime, regardless of others' interest. He battles self-doubt and struggles to recognize his own capabilities but demonstrates fierce resolve when motivated. His ethics reject disrespect or undermining others' enjoyment. He adheres rigidly to team instructions, often interpreting them literally, and prioritizes supporting teammates. This loyalty stems from Sohoku’s early Inter High training philosophy: no member bears the team alone; all must rely on and assist one another. He uses formal honorifics (-san, -senpai) by default, switching to -kun only for close friends like Shunsuke Imaizumi, Shoukichi Naruko, and Sangaku Manami.

Onoda’s cycling skills focus on extraordinary climbing stamina and sustained high cadence. He maintains 90 rpm uphill and hits 150-210 rpm in bursts, adjusting cadence seamlessly. His "mommy bike" upbringing, with mechanical constraints and a steep home access road, forged his innate climbing aptitude. He employs the "Love Hime" theme song for rhythm and motivation—a habit initially concealed but later embraced publicly. Excelling as a domestique, he specializes in chasing riders under orders or to aid teammates, though his slim build limits wind-shielding efficiency. Tactical awareness challenges him; he thrives on clear directives when pursuing targets, often smiling upon spotting rivals. His exceptional balance and "pendulum sway" technique enable rapid collision recovery, first-attempt mastery of roller training, and navigating narrow road edges. Frequent falls desensitized him to crashes, which he views as calming experiences.

Onoda evolves from a solitary otaku to a pivotal team member. After losing his first race to Imaizumi, he joins the cycling club, discovering competitive cycling through mentors like Kinjou and Makishima. His role expands in Inter High races, executing demanding tasks like drafting teammates over 70 km post-crash or illness. By his second year, he openly requests racing Manami as a personal goal, defying expectations of a purely supportive role. He defends teammates against dismissive rivals and mentors juniors like Issa Kaburagi. As third-year captain, he balances leadership with his spotlight aversion. Ongoing development includes refining flat-terrain skills and tactical understanding while maintaining climbing expertise and deepening rivalries.
