Description
Kaede Azusagawa, younger sister of Sakuta Azusagawa, endured life-altering online bullying in middle school, marked by death threats that triggered Adolescence Syndrome. This condition transformed her emotional anguish into physical injuries—bruises, fevers—while her psyche fractured under the strain. To survive, her mind severed ties to her past, erasing memories and crafting a new identity: “Kaede” (written in hiragana), a timid persona fearful of strangers and social contact. Cloaked in a panda hoodie for comfort, she retreated from school and society, clung to her brother, and adopted third-person speech as a shield.

Determined to reclaim her life, Kaede devised a meticulous plan: first wearing shoes, then stepping outside, gradually venturing to public spaces like Mai Sakurajima’s home and a park. Each effort exacted a physical toll, leaving her exhausted or injured. A beach trip shattered her fragile progress when childhood friend Kano Kotomi exposed her amnesia—Kaede’s blank stare at Kotomi laid bare the chasm between her present self and the forgotten past.

Her progress unearthed a haunting uncertainty: Would rediscovering her original identity erase her current existence? Overheard hospital conversations about her transient state magnified this fear. Yet she pressed on, attempting school despite panic attacks and physical collapse. A symbolic visit to the campus with Sakuta ended in retreat, the emotional weight too crushing.

A zoo visit reignited hope, offering joy that fortified her resolve. But success came at a cost: Reaching school gates coincided with the resurgence of her original memories, dissolving the two-year persona. The reborn Kaede—cheeky, socially adept—remembered nothing of her trauma or recovery. Sakuta mourned the sister he’d nurtured, while the restored Kaede, supported by family, rebuilt her life.

Her journey wove trauma, identity, and resilience into a stark tapestry. It laid bare how dissociation shields the self, how fragile memory anchors existence, and how confronting inner demons demands courage—even when victory risks self-annihilation.
