Description
Kaede Azusagawa’s Adolescence Syndrome emerged after online bullying in middle school, triggered by a classmate dispute that resulted in physical harm and dissociative amnesia. This trauma fractured her identity, replacing her former self—"Kaede-san"—with a fragile persona marked by social withdrawal, third-person speech, and reliance on a panda onesie for security.
Retreating into isolation with her brother Sakuta, she devised incremental goals to reclaim normalcy: answering calls, venturing outdoors, attending school. Each step exacted a physical toll, manifesting in fevers and bruises that underscored her tenacity.
Exposure to Sakuta’s friends, Mai Sakurajima and Rio Futaba, slowly eroded her anxieties. Mai’s mentorship, including gifting casual attire, bolstered Kaede’s confidence. A critical shift occurred when her original memories resurfaced, erasing two years of her altered existence. This reversion to her pre-trauma self strained Sakuta, who nonetheless supported her return to school.
Her recovery intertwined with her mother’s resurgence from a mental collapse initially sparked by Kaede’s ordeal. A tense family reunion dinner marked progress, though complicated by Sakuta’s temporary invisibility due to his own Syndrome. Their eventual reconciliation mirrored the family’s healing.
Later years saw Kaede enroll in high school, work at a diner with Tomoe Koga, and reconnect with childhood friend Kotomi Kano. Periodic neck bruises revealed lingering Syndrome episodes, reminders of unresolved struggles.
Her arc closed with mended family ties and tentative steps into independence—attending school festivals, navigating part-time work, and rebuilding bonds. The resolution of her mother’s turmoil and Kaede’s gradual self-reliance highlighted her transition from reclusive trauma survivor to resilient adolescent forging ahead.
