Description
Gobta is a Hobgoblin originally from a goblin village saved by Rimuru Tempest. He lives in Rimuru City, capital of the Jura-Tempest Federation, and serves as captain of the Goblin Riders, an elite cavalry unit mounted on Starwolves. He was among the first martial arts students trained by Hakurou after Hakurou evolved into a Kijin.
Despite evolving from a Goblin to a Hobgoblin, Gobta retains a childlike physical appearance distinct from other Hobgoblins, frequently leading to underestimation of his strength, though his status is recognized by perceptive entities like Gabiru. His small stature, approximately 95 cm tall, contributes to this unassuming presence.
Gobta's personality blends comedic traits with competence. He is often portrayed as an airhead yet demonstrates hidden genius in critical combat and leadership situations, earning recognition as a "prodigy" from observers like Rimuru. He exhibits relatable behaviors such as skipping training or avoiding responsibilities, like encouraging Rimuru to play hooky, and employs creative excuses for laziness, such as calling shade-napping "meditation training." Despite this, he shows dedication when motivated, exemplified by vigorous farm work after receiving a hoe from Rimuru. He values loyalty and friendship, defending allies against false accusations and displaying discernment, such as discomfort with extreme behaviors like masochism.
His background includes a perilous journey to the Dwarf Kingdom of Dwargon four months before meeting Rimuru. He traversed monster-infested territory on foot, a feat highlighting survival instincts and luck, and was severely injured before rescue by Kobold merchants. This journey typically took two months, but Gobta completed it in three days using newly evolved Tempest Wolves. After Rimuru named him, Gobta's evolution into a Hobgoblin solidified while his appearance remained unchanged.
Gobta possesses genius-level combat instincts, enabling him to defeat higher-class elites. He pioneered summoning Tempest Wolves and executing the extra skill Shadow Motion for rapid movement through shadows. His abilities include Unique Skills "Give Me Strength" and "Transformation" (魔狼合一, evolved from "Fusion"), facilitating merging with his Starwolf partner Ranga into a Werewolf, granting access to techniques like Apocalypse Howling (終末魔狼演舞) and Dance With Wolves (疾風魔狼演舞). Additional skills encompass Danger Detection, Malice Perception, elemental magic, and True Dragon magic when fused with Ranga. His equipment includes a magic kodachi capable of Icicle Lance attacks and a Case Cannon scabbard firing electromagnetic projectiles.
In "The Slime Diaries" spin-off, Gobta's daily life emphasizes his role as comic relief while showcasing relatable aspects of monster society. He guides Rimuru through Tempest's new establishments during a day off, revealing shared desires like avoiding work, and his interactions highlight the normalization of mundane activities such as shopping at fruit stands.
Gobta's development includes rising from vice-captain to captain of the Goblin Riders. His combat feats escalate significantly through fusion with Ranga, achieving tiers like High 6-B (Large Country level) post-Harvest Festival and at least 5-B (Planet level) during the Eastern Empire arc. This growth stems from continuous training under Hakurou and reactive evolution fueled by intense willpower. Grucius, a prominent warrior, acknowledges him as the strongest among Hobgoblins.
