Description
L'Arc Berg Sickle, known as the Scythe Hero, is a character who first appears during the Cal Mira archipelago arc and returns in the second season of The Rising of the Shield Hero. He originates from a world beyond the Waves, a different dimension from the one Naofumi Iwatani was summoned to. He is not only a Vassal Hero who wields the Vassal Scythe but also the king of a country that summoned the Hunting Hero, Kizuna Kazayama.
His personality is carefree and laid-back, often approaching problems with a relaxed attitude. Naofumi describes him as having an older-brother-like demeanor. Despite his royal status, L'Arc values his freedom and avoids being tied down by formality. He is a good judge of character, able to discern a person's true nature quickly. He possesses a strong warrior spirit, which becomes evident during combat. He has a playful and childish side, shown when he becomes excited over a ship ride or calls younger individuals "kiddo." He operates with high moral standards, refusing to harm those uninvolved in his mission, and he is charismatic enough to attract loyal allies.
His primary motivation is to protect his own world from the destructive Waves. He initially believes that killing the Four Cardinal Heroes is the only way to save his home, which forces him into conflict with Naofumi. However, he does not carry out this mission with malice; he respects worthy opponents and shows reluctance to harm innocent people. In the second season, his motivation shifts toward stopping the rogue Book Hero, Kyo Ethnina, who prematurely awakened the Spirit Tortoise for his own experiments. L'Arc, along with Glass and Therese Alexanderite, infiltrates the Spirit Tortoise to deal with this threat, setting aside his earlier conflict with Naofumi to work toward a common goal.
In the story, L'Arc serves as both an antagonist and later an ally. He first appears as a friendly adventurer who earns Naofumi's trust before revealing his true mission to slay the Cardinal Heroes. After their battle, the two go their separate ways, but they cross paths again inside the Spirit Tortoise. There, L'Arc proposes a temporary truce to eliminate Kyo. Although Naofumi initially refuses, circumstances force them to cooperate indirectly. L'Arc and his group pursue the same enemy, eventually aiding Naofumi's party. This positions L'Arc as a key player in the fight against a greater threat, bridging the gap between their worlds.
Key relationships include his close bond with Therese, a mage who fights alongside him; their dynamic is marked by frequent playful arguments but deep mutual trust. He has a strong mutual respect with Glass, who shares his warrior ethos. His relationship with Naofumi begins with friendship, turns to rivalry, and evolves into tentative cooperation based on shared goals. He also shares a brotherly dynamic with Raphtalia, sometimes training her and encouraging her. His relationship with Kizuna, the Hunting Hero his kingdom summoned, is one of friendship tinged with friendly arguments due to their contrasting personalities.
The character shows development from a straightforward enemy driven by duty to a more cooperative figure who recognizes Naofumi's strength and integrity. His experience fighting alongside his former foe helps him grow beyond his initial narrow mission.
L'Arc's notable abilities stem from his mastery of the Vassal Scythe. He is an exceptional close-range fighter with incredible speed, strength, and battle instincts. He is powerful enough to defeat the Sword, Spear, and Bow Heroes with ease. His scythe techniques often involve wind-based attacks, such as Wind Slice or Wind Blade, and a powerful tornado ability. He can also use techniques like Flying Circle and Thunder Rain. His combat effectiveness increases significantly when he fights alongside Therese, who supports him with elemental magic.
