Description
Layla Ruzhkova is a human-demon hybrid known as a Nadezhda, created within a secret Moscow project and raised by scientist Natalia Ruzhkova as a daughter. Plagued by shame over her demonic nature, she found acceptance when Valery Kaminski called her beautiful and powerful. This affirmation secured her fierce loyalty, leading her to embrace his ambition of world conquest despite knowing his goals. She aided him in destroying the original Moscow Combat Revue, which had protected her younger sister, Klara. Layla then joined Kaminski's rebuilt Revue, composed of mechanical imposters, to recapture Klara after Natalia fled with her.
She possesses silver hair and blue eyes, typically dressed in a navy blue mini-dress with patterned details, black gloves, pantyhose, and heels. Transforming into her Nadezhda state grants her black wings, a revealing black outfit, red claws, and red tattoo-like markings. Her eyes shift to a red glow with a diamond-like shape, revealing sharp teeth and a blue crystalline object covering her right eye. Initially incognito, she wore a long black robe and metal helmet alongside other impostor members.
Stoic and intensely loyal to Kaminski for accepting her demonic side, Layla follows his commands without question, though privately doubts grow as his actions escalate. Her driving motivation is a profound, possessive love for Klara, fueling her desire for reunion at any cost. This manifests as jealousy when Kaminski focuses on Klara and hostility towards interference, leading her to physically confront Hatsuho Shinonome for defending Klara and push Sakura Amamiya off a tower. Despite her harsh actions, Layla's love for Klara proves redemptive: aboard the Sevastopol airship, she overcomes Kaminski's brainwashing to rescue Klara, sustaining mortal injuries. This act highlights her conflict between loyalty and unconditional sisterly love.
Layla's narrative role focuses on retrieving Klara for Kaminski. She first attacks a train in Russia to capture Klara, battling the guardian "White Cape" before retreating upon encountering international Combat Revue members. Later arriving in Tokyo with Kaminski, she confronts the Imperial Combat Revue demanding Klara's return. After a demon attack, she effortlessly defeats the threat that overwhelmed the Flower Division, showcasing her combat prowess. She participates in Kaminski's schemes, deploying mechanized units to abduct Klara and monitoring the Flower Division. Her arc culminates in Episode 11, fighting the Flower Division while Kaminski repairs the Sevastopol's cannon. Witnessing Klara's trauma weakens the brainwashing, enabling her to free Klara despite fatal wounds. In Episode 12, her spirit reappears during the final battle to restrain Kaminski, facilitating his defeat. A post-credits scene ambiguously implies her survival, observing a dissipating crystal in Shadow Tokyo.
