TV Special
Description
Manon, known in the English version as Mairin, is a young and enthusiastic beginning Pokémon Trainer from the Kalos region. Her journey begins when she receives a Chespin as her first partner Pokémon, which she affectionately calls Hari-san or Chespie. The Chespin is almost always kept outside its Poké Ball and is as energetic and eager as its Trainer. Manon's initial encounter with the concept of Mega Evolution occurs when she witnesses a battle between the Trainer Alain and his Charizard against a Mega Absol. Deeply impressed and curious, she decides to follow Alain on his travels to learn more about Mega Evolution and the Mega Stones associated with it.
Manon is characterized by her boundless curiosity, optimistic nature, and an enthusiasm that often leads her to act without hesitation. She can be clumsy, frequently tripping or falling, though her Chespin is quick to react and help her in such moments. She is also notably brave and straightforward, chasing after what captures her interest even if she is inexperienced. Her personality is defined by loyalty; she cares deeply for her friends and is willing to go out of her way to support them, especially Alain. Her primary motivation throughout the Mega Evolution Specials is to accompany Alain and help him on his quest, seeing him as both a source of inspiration and a friend she wishes to protect.
During the events of Pokémon: Mega Evolution Special IV, Manon travels alongside Steven Stone to return to Kalos. She seeks out Alain, who has accepted a challenge from Lysandre to battle ten Mega Evolution users in a row. When she asks Alain to continue traveling together, he refuses harshly, telling her that her presence would prevent him from becoming stronger and that he wants to protect her from danger. This argument leaves Manon deeply hurt and upset. While she walks away to be alone, her Chespin wanders into a restricted laboratory within Lysandre Labs. There, Chespin stumbles upon an experiment involving a Zygarde Core. A sudden explosion occurs during the experiment, and Chespin is caught in the blast, falling unconscious and emitting a strange green glow. Manon is devastated upon finding her partner in this condition. She, along with Professor Sycamore and Steven, rushes Chespin to a Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy determines that while it is not in immediate danger, the cause of its condition and the glow remain unknown. This event becomes a turning point for Manon, as she effectively stops her journey to stay by Chespin's side while it recovers. She is implied to be unaware that Chespin's recovery depends on Alain continuing to assist Lysandre with his experiments.
Manon's key relationships revolve around Alain, who serves as both a mentor figure and a friend. She admires his strength and dedication while also wanting to ease the burden he carries. She also interacts with Professor Sycamore and Steven Stone, who show concern for her and Alain. Her bond with her own Chespin is her most immediate connection, with the two sharing a close and affectionate partnership. As a Trainer, Manon has shown some resourcefulness, such as when she captured a Flabébé by following Alain's type-advice to use a Toxic attack. Her abilities are still developing, and she is portrayed as a novice rather than a seasoned battler. In the original Japanese broadcast, a recurring segment called Manon's Illustrated Mega Evolution Journal featured her and her Chespin introducing the various Mega Evolved Pokémon that Alain had battled. Manon's role in the story is largely that of a supportive companion whose presence and emotional stakes drive Alain's decisions and highlight the personal costs of his quest for power. Her development is marked by initial optimism giving way to the sobering reality of the dangers surrounding Mega Evolution and the experiments tied to it.
