Description
Welf Crozzo was born into Rakia's noble Crozzo family, famed for crafting powerful magic swords. He manifested the hereditary Crozzo Blood skill, granting him the ability to forge these weapons. While his family celebrated this, Welf despised the magic swords, witnessing how their power corrupted users and bred greed. He fled Rakia with aid from his former goddess, Phobos, rejecting his family's legacy and vowing never to create magic swords again.
He joined the Hephaestus Familia in Orario. Goddess Hephaestus, despite initial reservations about the Crozzo reputation, recognized his potential and accepted him after learning of his commitment to non-magical craftsmanship. Under her mentorship, he honed his blacksmithing skills while maintaining his refusal to make magic swords. Their relationship deepened when Welf saw Hephaestus's eye defect without fear or revulsion, sparking her romantic interest. Welf later developed an open crush on Hephaestus, declaring he would win her affection by forging a sword surpassing her own creations without magic.
Welf eventually left to join the Hestia Familia, becoming Bell Cranel's personal smith and later the familia's primary blacksmith. He remains casual and honest, insisting others address him without honorifics. He actively avoids his family name and rejects outsider requests for magic swords. His pride manifests in insisting Bell wear only his forged armor and his ambition to surpass Hephaestus through pure skill. This determination sometimes borders on overconfidence, as when his "High Smith" title led to complacency, criticized by senior smith Tsubaki after she broke one of his shortswords. He gives his creations poorly chosen names, often overruled by recipients like Bell or Mikoto.
As a Level 2 adventurer, he possesses enhanced physical prowess, exceptional strength, balance, and swordsmanship, demonstrated in combat like defeating Zanis and high-wire rescues; his senses sharpened further after leveling up. His blacksmith specialization focuses on traditional weapons and armor, avoiding complex mechanisms. His Blacksmith development ability imbues creations with special properties.
His magical capabilities include Will-o-Wisp, an anti-magic fire disrupting spellcasting by causing targets to self-destruct, effective against long-chant magics or high-magic-affinity entities like elves; its range expands with channeled mind power. His Crozzo Blood skill enables forging exceptionally potent magic swords—stronger than his ancestors'—capable of harming foes like the Black Goliath or restraining Level 6 adventurers. Initially, these were single-use and brittle, symbolizing his resentment. After the Black Goliath battle on the 18th Floor, he reluctantly began crafting them exclusively for Hestia Familia members.
A significant evolution occurred during an expedition where Welf developed "unbreakable" magic swords that draw on the wielder's magic power instead of their own durability. These avoid shattering but risk exhausting the user and perform best with mages. When Welf wields them, his Spirit blood resonates, matching or exceeding his traditional Crozzo swords in power. Multiple users can combine magic to amplify effects. This innovation reflected his growing acceptance of his abilities as protective tools.
His secondary skill, Veritas Burn, grants high fire resistance and boosts fire-based attacks. Equipment includes a self-forged, unnamed greatsword; portable smithing tools for on-site repairs; Salamander Wool for fire resistance; and Undine Cloth for water protection.
His character development spans rejecting his past to embracing his abilities responsibly. Early on, he was a hesitant blacksmith haunted by family legacy, but battles like the Black Goliath fight catalyzed his tactical use of magic swords for allies. He accepted that the swords' morality depends on their use, forging them only for necessity and familial protection. Later, he emerged as a confident warrior and strategist, mentoring newer adventurers and leading in combat. His bond with Bell Cranel strengthened through shared trials, and his unresolved romantic pursuit of Hephaestus remains a personal motivator for his craftsmanship.
