Description
Hephaistos is the goddess of the forge and the leader of the powerful and aptly named Hephaestus Familia in the labyrinth city of Orario. As a deity, she has existed for an immensely long time, measured in the hundreds of millions of years. Despite her divine nature and advanced age, she has chosen to live and work among mortals, having descended from Heaven with other gods to experience life in the mortal realm.

In terms of appearance, Hephaistos is a striking figure with red hair cut to about neck-length and deep crimson eyes. Her face is sharp and her build slender, and she most often wears practical, masculine-style clothing befitting a master craftswoman. The most notable feature of her appearance is the black leather eyepatch she always wears over her right eye. Beneath the patch, her eye is said to have a severe and horrifying defect, something that has caused almost everyone who has ever seen it to recoil in fear or disgust. This has given her a deep-seated complex about her own appearance, leading her to believe she is ugly and possesses no romantic charm whatsoever.

Her personality is a study in contrasts, balancing a stern and professional public demeanor with hidden vulnerabilities. As the head of one of the largest and most famous crafting Familias in Orario, she is serious, hardworking, and highly principled. She places immense value on the reputation of her Familia and the quality of its work, refusing to lend her divine name to any weapon that is less than masterfully crafted. Beneath this composed and diligent exterior, however, she is deeply caring and somewhat emotional, particularly when it comes to those she is close to. She is known for being surprisingly sentimental about romance and can become flustered and excited when faced with affection.

Hephaistos is motivated primarily by her passion for the craft of forging. She takes genuine joy in seeing new and unknown weapons created by her Familia's smiths. Her primary goal, as both a goddess and a master smith, is to oversee and foster the creation of exceptional weapons, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the mortal realm. Beyond her craft, her actions are often motivated by loyalty and care for her friends and the members of her Familia, whom she cherishes greatly.

Within the story, Hephaistos serves as an important pillar of support for other key figures. She is a long-time friend of the goddess Hestia and has a deep, complex history with her. This relationship often sees Hephaistos reluctantly but consistently acting as Hestia's caretaker, providing her with financial support, a place to live, and even a loan to commission a special weapon. It was at Hestia's earnest request that she personally forged the legendary Hestia Knife, a living weapon infused with Hestia's own falna, for the young adventurer Bell Cranel. This act was a significant one, as it involved her divine abilities without using her full arcanum, showcasing her unparalleled skill.

Her role is even more deeply intertwined with a member of her own Familia, the young smith Welf Crozzo. Hephaistos recognized Welf's immense talent but was also frustrated by his initial refusal to forge powerful magic swords, which she saw as a waste of his potential. Her direct words to him were a catalyst for him to change his mind and embrace all aspects of his abilities to protect his comrades. The nature of their relationship shifted dramatically when Welf, undaunted by the rumors, removed her eyepatch and showed no fear or revulsion at the sight of her disfigured eye. This act of acceptance caused her to fall deeply in love with him. She later made a pact with him, promising to accept his love if he could one day craft a weapon superior even to her own divine creations, setting a monumental goal for his personal and professional development. Their relationship continues to evolve as he works toward this challenge, and she is known to speak of him fondly and at great length to her Familia's captain, Tsubaki Collbrande.

Her development throughout the series is most notable in her personal and romantic life. Initially resigned to never finding a partner due to her self-perceived ugliness, her interactions with Welf force her to confront her deep-seated insecurities. She learns to open up and be vulnerable, moving from a place of emotional solitude to one of hopeful romantic engagement. Her confidence as a woman, separate from her identity as a goddess and master smith, begins to grow as she dares to believe she can be loved for who she is.

As a goddess of the forge, her abilities are legendary, even with her divine power sealed in the mortal world. She is a master smith of the highest order, capable of crafting divine-level weapons that are unmatched in power and quality. Her most famous creation in the series is the Hestia Knife, a blade that grows in strength alongside its wielder. Her divine authority also extends to control over divine flames, specifically forging fires, which sets her apart from other fire-aligned deities. Furthermore, as a god, she possesses enhanced perception, able to see through mortal lies, and can unleash an aura of divine majesty, known as Divinity, that can overwhelm mortals. She is also permitted to use a Divine Mirror, a tool that allows her to observe any location in the mortal world, a power that is restricted but still accessible to her.
