Description
Yuki Sohma bears the Chinese zodiac Rat curse, transforming into the animal when hugged by the opposite sex or under severe stress. Initially favored as the Rat, he endured extreme emotional and physical abuse from family head Akito Sohma. Akito isolated him in a windowless room and systematically convinced him of his worthlessness. His parents relinquished control to Akito, leveraging him for social standing, while his older brother Ayame remained distant during their childhood.
Externally, Yuki presents a reserved, polite, and elegant demeanor, earning him the school nickname "Prince" for his perceived accomplishments. This facade starkly contrasts his internal reality: profound self-esteem issues, deep loneliness, and difficulty forming genuine bonds stemming from his trauma. He consciously maintains a perfect image, recognizing his own kindness as performative to gain acceptance. His personality includes a sarcastic and sometimes arrogant wit, which surfaces more as he heals. He is notably incompetent at household chores but excels academically and in martial arts.
A pivotal childhood escape from Akito around age 6-7 led him to encounter a lost Tohru Honda. He helped reunite her with her mother Kyoko, giving her Kyo Sohma’s hat for comfort. Witnessing Kyoko's unconditional love for Tohru offered Yuki his first exposure to familial warmth, a memory he clung to during dark times and later fueled his resolve to seek connections beyond the Sohma cage.
His relationships drive his growth. He initially developed romantic feelings for Tohru, seeing her as acceptance, but later realized he sought a maternal figure embodying the unconditional love he lacked. This epiphany allowed him to redefine his affection as profound gratitude, calling her "beloved" like the sky—close yet unobtainable romantically. His dynamic with Kyo Sohma, the Cat, is rooted in mutual envy: Yuki covets Kyo's emotional freedom and closeness to Tohru, while Kyo resents Yuki's perceived privilege. Their rivalry evolves into uneasy respect, culminating in a shared acknowledgment of past misunderstandings.
As student council president, Yuki befriends blunt Kakeru Manabe and falls in love with treasurer Machi Kuragi. Machi’s similar trauma from parental neglect creates a deep bond; Yuki accommodates her need for imperfection by deliberately disrupting order. Their relationship becomes central to his emotional liberation. When his curse breaks—last among the zodiac members—he immediately embraces Machi, symbolizing his freedom. He later gives her a key to his apartment, signifying commitment.
Yuki's development culminates in confronting Akito, where he chooses forgiveness not for Akito’s sake, but to free himself from lingering pain. He acknowledges his growth from a "weak" person reliant on others to a self-sufficient individual capable of mutual relationships. He later marries Machi, and they have a son, Mutsuki. He maintains ties with his mother, humorously accepting her pragmatic nature, and supports younger Sohma family members, embodying the stability he once sought.
