TV-Series
Description
Kazuma Soma is a martial arts master operating a dojo near the Sohma family's main estate. Though in his early 40s, he appears younger, with brown hair and eyes. He initially wore his hair long in a ponytail secured by a traditional white tie but later cut it short, symbolizing the end of his superstitious beliefs regarding Kyo's curse. He typically dresses in a simple dark blue kimono with a black belt.

As a child, Kazuma cruelly rejected candy offered by his Cat-possessed grandfather, calling it "cursed." His grandfather's forgiving smile haunted him, particularly after witnessing similar mistreatment of Kyo, the next Cat. To atone, Kazuma took in Kyo following the death of Kyo's mother and rejection by his biological father. Despite facing ostracization from the Sohma family, he raised Kyo as his own son, providing unwavering love and support. He trained Kyo and other young Sohmas, including Yuki, Kagura, and Hatsuharu, in martial arts to instill discipline and strength. Kyo refers to him as "Shishou" (master), a title initially used by his students.

Kazuma is wise, level-headed, and deeply empathetic, yet views himself as selfish for imposing his feelings on Kyo. He fears his love might burden Kyo, especially after hearing Kyo deny seeing him as a father. Despite this self-doubt, he defies Sohma family traditions and Akito's authority to protect Kyo, showing remarkable fearlessness in challenging the family's oppression of the Cat. He is notoriously clumsy in daily tasks, particularly cooking, and relies on his assistant, Kunimitsu Tomoda, for household management; his lack of practical skills includes not knowing how to prepare tea.

After Kyo blamed himself for Kyoko Honda's death, Kazuma took him to the mountains for four months to recover. There, he reassured Kyo that "despair will attack you again and again... hope will return to you. Again and again." Upon returning, he observed Kyo's improved demeanor due to Tohru Honda's influence. To test Tohru's sincerity and prove Kyo could be accepted, Kazuma forcibly removed Kyo's rosary, exposing his true form. When Tohru embraced the transformed Kyo, Kazuma's plan succeeded, reinforcing his belief in hope. He later reconciled with Kyo, who vowed to become a man worthy of calling him father, mending their relationship. Kyo now visits the dojo regularly.

Kazuma provides refuge for other Sohmas, like Rin, during her recuperation. In the series' conclusion, Saki Hanajima works as a cook at his dojo, though he views her only as Kyo's classmate. He remains a steadfast guardian, symbolizing redemption and paternal devotion within the Sohma family's fractured dynamics.
