Description
Kazuma Soma, a martial arts teacher and adoptive father to Kyo Soma, bears the weight of guilt from childhood rejection of his cursed grandfather—the former Cat spirit—which drives him to raise Kyo with unwavering support, countering the boy’s ostracization by his biological family. Operating a dojo near the Soma estate, he trains Kyo, Kagura, Yuki, and Hatsuharu, instilling discipline and resilience to navigate their cursed existences.

Wise and kind with a tranquil presence, Kazuma privately grapples with self-doubt over projecting his remorse onto Kyo, contrasting his emotional depth with comical clumsiness in mundane tasks. He depends on assistant Kunimitsu for daily necessities like cooking. In a defining act, he removes Kyo’s rosary, compelling him to expose his true form to Tohru Honda—a calculated risk to challenge her acceptance and Kyo’s self-hatred. This catalyzes Kyo’s emotional breakthrough and reconciliation with Kazuma, who later shears his long hair, symbolizing transition into a chapter of trust in Kyo’s newfound stability.

Kazuma’s past intertwines with the Soma curse: After Kyo’s mother’s suicide and paternal abandonment, he adopts the boy, initially seeking atonement but nurturing authentic paternal love over time. He guides Kyo through severe depression post-Kyoko Honda’s death—unaware of Kyo’s indirect ties to the tragedy—organizing a four-month mountain retreat to foster healing.

Later, Kazuma shelters Rin during her recovery, extending his protector role. His conversations with Tohru reveal hopes that her bond with Kyo avoids replicating his grandparents’ marriage, built on pity rather than mutual affection. Though Saki Hanajima joins his dojo, their relationship remains rooted in respect, devoid of romantic undertones.

Kazuma’s arc traces redemption and familial ties, evolving from guilt-fueled duty to heartfelt devotion. Symbolic acts—hair-cutting, fostering resilience—underscore his dedication to Kyo’s healing and the Soma clan’s fractured unity, embodying quiet transformation through steadfast care.
