Akito Soma is the head of the Sohma family and embodies the Chinese Zodiac’s “God.” Born female but raised as male due to her mother Ren’s demands, Akito’s upbringing was marked by her father Akira’s overindulgence and her mother’s psychological abuse. Akira instilled in Akito the belief that she was inherently special and entitled to unconditional devotion from the Zodiac members, while Ren fueled deep insecurities and hatred. After Akira’s death, Akito’s mental stability fractured, leading to violent and controlling behavior as she enforced loyalty through fear and manipulation. She committed severe acts of abuse against other Zodiac members, including blinding Hatori, throwing Rin from a window, attacking Kisa, and confining Yuki. A confrontation with Tohru Honda became a turning point, as Tohru’s empathy allowed Akito to acknowledge her own pain and the harm she had caused. Akito then released the Zodiac from their bonds, destroyed the Cat’s confinement room, publicly revealed her gender, and began living as a woman. She later married Shigure Sohma and gave birth to a son, Shiki. As a mother, Akito became protective and encouraging, prioritizing her son’s freedom and breaking the cycle of abuse she had experienced. She distanced herself from the Sohma family out of guilt, formed friendships outside the family with individuals such as Saki Hanajima and Mine Kuramae, and continued to atone for her past actions without seeking forgiveness.
