Description
Akito Sohma leads the Sohma family as the embodiment of the Chinese Zodiac's "God." Born female but raised male due to her mother Ren's demands, this enforced identity stemmed from Ren's fear of being replaced in her husband Akira's affections. Ren subjected Akito to psychological abuse, poisoning her with insecurity and hatred, while Akira instilled the belief that Akito was inherently special and destined for the Zodiac members' unconditional love. This upbringing created profound abandonment issues and a warped sense of entitlement. Akito's mental state deteriorated after Akira's death and the breaking of Kureno's curse, leading to violent and controlling behavior.
As family head, Akito enforced the Zodiac bonds through fear and manipulation, demanding absolute loyalty, particularly from the male members, and viewing outside relationships as threats. Her severe abuse included blinding Hatori in one eye during an altercation over his relationship with Kana, throwing Rin out of a window for dating Hatsuharu, and physically attacking Kisa after Hiro confessed his feelings. Akito justified these acts by claiming her divine right as God, displaying extreme misogyny and largely projecting her hatred of Ren onto other women. Her instability manifested in violent tantrums, animal cruelty, and isolating Zodiac members, such as confining Yuki in a dark room and whipping him.
Akito's intense fear of abandonment was fueled by Ren's taunts that the Zodiac bonds were fake and she would ultimately be rejected. This fear intensified as curses began breaking; Momiji's defiance shattered her illusion of control. A confrontation with Tohru Honda became a turning point. Tohru's empathy during Akito's breakdown at Kyoko Honda's grave allowed Akito to acknowledge her own pain and the harm she caused. This led her to release the Zodiac from their bonds, destroy the Cat's room, and publicly reveal her gender, rejecting her forced identity. She accepted that some, like Rin, might never forgive her and committed to atoning for her actions.
After the curse ended, Akito embraced life as a woman, growing her hair out and wearing feminine clothing. She reconciled with and married Shigure Sohma, whom she had loved since childhood. In the future, she became a protective and encouraging mother to their son Shiki, breaking the cycle of abuse by prioritizing his freedom and happiness. She distanced herself from the Sohma family out of guilt, believing she deserved any lingering resentment or pain. Her self-imposed isolation included living separately during gatherings, though she formed friendships outside the family with individuals like Saki Hanajima and Mine Kuramae. A key moment of growth occurred when she shielded Shiki from Ren's knife attack, taking the injury herself. She vowed to bear the consequences of her past alone, ensuring they did not burden her son.
