TV-Series
Description
Isuzu Soma, called Rin, carries the Soma family curse tied to the Chinese Zodiac Horse spirit. This curse transforms her into a black horse if embraced by the opposite sex or under extreme stress. Rin stands 165.5 cm tall with fair skin and sharp dark brown eyes. Her hair, initially hip-length and black, was later cut unevenly to nape length by Akito Sohma as punishment. A prominent scar marks her back from being pushed out a window by Akito. She frequently wears dark-colored, revealing clothing reflecting a punk or gothic aesthetic; this style serves as rebellion against her parents' earlier treatment of her as a doll and expresses her inner turmoil.

Rin endured significant childhood trauma. Her parents initially presented a loving facade, but this shattered when she questioned their happiness, leading to neglect and physical abuse that resulted in hospitalization. During one hospital stay, her mother explicitly rejected her, stating she could no longer love her. This abandonment caused Rin to develop panic disorder, low self-worth, and psychosomatic symptoms including stomach ulcers, fainting spells, and an inability to eat comfortably around others. Disowned, she moved in with Kagura Soma's family but struggled to accept their kindness, often isolating herself.

Her personality exhibits fierce independence, stubbornness, and a sharp tongue, masking deep loyalty and protectiveness. Rin believes herself "warped" and unworthy of love, fearing she burdens others – a self-hatred stemming from parental rejection and reinforced by Akito, who condemned her relationship with Hatsuharu Soma. To protect Haru, Rin claimed sole responsibility for their romance, provoking Akito's violent retaliation. During her recovery, she broke up with Haru without explanation, believing distancing him was necessary for his safety. Her primary motivation became breaking the zodiac curse solely to free Haru, refusing assistance—especially from Tohru Honda, whom she viewed as too kind and liable to be harmed. Rin distrusted relying on others, stating she preferred working alone to avoid "leeching" off kind people.

Rin gradually opened emotionally. After collapsing from stress, she accepted comfort from Tohru, whom she secretly viewed as a mother figure. She later reconciled with Haru when he found her semi-conscious on the street. Rin became fiercely protective of Tohru, expressing anger at anyone who hurt her. Despite this, she continued struggling with self-worth, notably offering herself to Shigure Soma in a desperate bargain for curse-breaking information, reflecting her belief that her only value was sexual. Post-curse, Rin could not forgive Akito for the abuse inflicted on the zodiac members and felt isolated in her anger when others moved on. She acknowledged her emotional pain persisted despite the curse breaking.

In the sequel *Fruits Basket Another*, Rin marries Hatsuharu Soma and has twin children named Sora and Riku. She maintains friendships with Kagura, Momiji Soma, and Hiro Soma, who consistently worries for her well-being.
