Description
Kureno Soma is a member of the Soma family and the former vessel of the Rooster spirit from the Chinese zodiac, though his curse uniquely broke years before the main events of the story, making him the first of the zodiac to be freed. Because the bond dissolved a decade ago, he no longer transforms and is not bound by the same supernatural limitations as the other cursed members. Despite this, he continues to live in near-total isolation at the Soma family estate, rarely leaving and having minimal experience with the outside world.

His personality is defined by an almost excessive selflessness and gentleness. Kureno is kind, polite, and soft-spoken, often appearing slightly scatterbrained or absent-minded in unfamiliar situations. He consistently places the needs of others above his own, to the point that his own desires become suppressed, and he struggles with making personal decisions. This trait causes others to compare him to Tohru Honda, as both share a deep, forgiving nature and a tendency to forgive those who hurt them.

Kureno’s central motivation revolves around a profound sense of guilt and responsibility toward Akito Soma, the head of the family and the zodiac’s “god.” When his curse vanished unexpectedly during his teenage years, Akito, terrified of losing the bonds that defined her existence, begged him to never leave. Moved by pity and unable to bear her suffering, Kureno agreed to remain by her side and act as if his connection still existed. This promise trapped him in a stifling, codependent relationship for years. He serves as Akito’s most trusted companion and assistant, enduring possessive and often cruel treatment out of a misguided belief that staying will spare her loneliness and that leaving would be a betrayal of his only real freedom.

Within the narrative, Kureno acts as a quiet catalyst for change. His existence is the first concrete proof that the zodiac curse can break on its own, unbinding a spirit without any outside intervention. Initially, he remains hidden from most of the other zodiac members, but his eventual encounter with Tohru and his growing feelings for Arisa Uotani force him to confront the unsustainable nature of his sacrifice. He realizes that staying with Akito not only prevents his own happiness but also hinders Akito’s ability to grow beyond her dependency on the zodiac.

Key relationships define his arc. With Akito, he shares a deeply entangled, romanticized bond built on pity, fear, and obligation. With Arisa Uotani, the brash and fiercely loyal friend of Tohru, he discovers a genuine, gentle love that shows him the possibility of a life chosen freely. Through Arisa, he begins to understand that living for himself is not a crime. His interactions with Shigure Soma, who harbors his own complex feelings for Akito, become strained due to Kureno’s place at Akito’s side. Notably, before his curse broke, Kureno was close to Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame, looking up to them as older brothers and sharing the mystical dream that foretold Akito’s birth.

Kureno’s development is rooted in the painful moment he decides to break his promise. After an intense confrontation and being physically attacked by Akito, who stabs him in a fit of rage, he finally leaves the estate. This act, though harsh, allows him to step into the world on his own terms, seeking out Arisa and beginning a life unclouded by guilt. The injuries he sustains in that final encounter leave a lasting physical mark, and he is later seen using a cane. His journey is one of learning that self-sacrifice without boundaries is not kindness but a form of weakness, and that true compassion sometimes requires letting go.

As for notable abilities, before his curse broke, Kureno transformed into a sparrow rather than a rooster, a sign that the original zodiac bond had weakened over time. After the curse lifted, he lost the ability to fly, a freedom he quietly misses. Physically, he is a tall, slender young man who typically wears formal or subdued clothing, though he personally dislikes suits and prefers light, unobtrusive outfits that help him blend into the background. His most significant attributes are emotional rather than supernatural: an immense capacity for empathy, a gentle persistence, and the eventual courage to reclaim his own life.
