Description
Kagura Soma is a young woman of nineteen years who is a member of the Soma family, bearing the curse of the Chinese zodiac in the form of the Boar. She is a recurring character in the story, initially presenting a sweet and girlish exterior that often gives way to a violently impulsive and emotionally aggressive nature, especially when her feelings are strongly engaged. Physically, Kagura is petite with fair skin, large round brown eyes, and long straight brown hair that she frequently wears in braids at the sides of her head. She has a notable penchant for handmade accessories and is rarely seen without a distinctive orange backpack she sewed herself, which is shaped like a cat.

Kagura’s personality is marked by a stark and often comedic duality. Under normal circumstances, she can be a polite, considerate, and friendly young woman who gets along well with others, particularly her fellow zodiac member Ritsu Soma. However, this calm demeanor is a fragile facade that shatters the moment she is confronted with her intense feelings for her cousin, Kyo Soma. When Kyo is near, Kagura transforms into a whirlwind of unrestrained emotion. She becomes overwhelmingly clingy, has no sense of personal space, and can switch from affectionate cooing to explosive physical violence in an instant. This behavior is not born of malice but rather a complete lack of emotional restraint; like the boar she represents, she charges forward at full force, overwhelming everyone in her path. This violent streak is so potent that she has been known to destroy parts of her own home, such as kicking down the front door, much to her family's weary acceptance.

The roots of Kagura's obsessive love for Kyo are complex and form a central part of her character development. As a child, she hated being a member of the zodiac and felt responsible for her parents' unhappy marriage. When she met a young Kyo, she was drawn to him not out of kindness, but because she felt relief that there was someone whose fate as the hated Cat was even more miserable than her own. Befriending him made her feel better about herself. This unhealthy foundation was shattered when she forcefully removed the prayer beads from Kyo's wrist, revealing his monstrous true form for the first time. Terrified, Kagura ran away, abandoning him. The overwhelming guilt from this moment became the driving force behind her relentless pursuit of him. She convinced herself that by loving Kyo and accepting the monster within him, she could atone for her childhood cowardice and erase the selfish person she had been. For years, she mistook this desperate need for self-redemption for true love, forcing her affections onto Kyo and declaring herself his fiancée.

In the second season, Kagura’s role evolves from a comedic obstacle to a more insightful and tragic figure. She serves as a foil to the protagonist, Tohru Honda. Both care deeply for Kyo, but their motivations are different. While Kagura’s love is initially born from a desire to make herself feel better, Tohru’s is purely focused on Kyo’s own happiness. Kagura’s relationship with Tohru is significant; she initially sees Tohru as a rival, but the two eventually develop a genuine and supportive friendship. Her presence also highlights the shared burden of the zodiac curse, and she has been shown to have a caring, older-sister-like relationship with the horse, Isuzu Rin, who stays at her family's home.

The most pivotal moment for Kagura in the second season occurs during a date with Kyo, where she finally confesses the ugly truth of her past motivations. She admits that she looked down on him as children and that her entire pursuit of him was a selfish act driven by guilt. This honest confrontation allows her to finally begin to let go of her possessive obsession and apologize. This moment marks a significant shift from obsession to genuine respect. She recognizes that Kyo’s feelings lie with Tohru and steps back, not out of defeat, but out of a newfound emotional maturity.

Notably, Kagura possesses considerable physical abilities. Thanks to her training at Kazuma Soma’s dojo, the same place where Kyo trained, she has tremendous physical strength and knows martial arts techniques, making her a formidable force whenever her temper gets the best of her or when she decides to chase after Kyo. Her journey is one of self-reflection and growth, moving from a person who used love as a shield against her own guilt to someone capable of honest self-criticism and genuine care for the happiness of others.
