Description
Nozomi Harasaki, a Japanese young woman, enters the story as Ryo Hazuki's classmate and close friend in Yokosuka. She stands 164 cm tall with dark brown hair and brown eyes, initially wearing a tan sweater, black and red checkered skirt, dark brown socks, and light brown shoes. Her childhood included moving to Vancouver, Canada, with her parents for their work. She later returned to Yokosuka as a junior high student to live with her grandmother Toki Aida and assist at Aida Florist. This shift caused cultural alienation, leading classmates to bully her for behaviors influenced by her Canadian upbringing; Ryo repeatedly defended her, sparking her enduring affection. Fluent in English and Japanese, she aspires to be an interpreter or translator.

Personality-wise, Nozomi shows maturity and wisdom beyond her years, yet exhibits superstition through belief in good luck charms. Though generally shy, she displays courage when confronting threats, like defending a child from bullies. She prioritizes empathy and peace, often supporting others—such as giving flowers to Ryo and Ine Hayata after Iwao Hazuki's death and aiding in a kitten search. Her relationship with her mother remains tense, marked by frequent arguments.

After Iwao's murder, her parents demand her return to Canada, creating emotional conflict as she fears for Ryo's safety during his vengeance quest. Key events include her kidnapping by the Mad Angels gang, prompting Ryo's rescue and a motorcycle ride through the city. In an optional scene, she confesses her love to Ryo in Sakuragaoka Park, though he stays focused on his mission. Before Ryo departs for Hong Kong, she gives him a protective amulet, expressing sorrow over their limited time.

Later, during Ryo's travels in China, Shenhua Ling inquires about Nozomi. Ryo shows a Yokosuka photo, and Shenhua remarks on her beauty. In Guilin, Shenhua recalls details about her while discussing Ryo's friends. In Shenmue III, Ryo calls her from Hotel Niaowu; she voices concern over his dangerous pursuits, and their talk reveals her lingering disappointment when he calls her just a friend. She mentions adapting to Canadian life, making new friends, and enjoying school more than in Japan.

The anime adaptation features her assisting Ryo's investigation into his father's death and questioning his college commitment amid his revenge obsession. Her farewell occurs in daytime, differing from the game's nighttime setting.

Early concept art and development renders depict design variations, including a strapless blue dress and alternative hairstyles, reflecting iterative changes during production.
