Description
Jewelry Bonney, known by the epithet "Big Eater," is a pirate captain originating from the South Blue and a prominent member of the group known as the Worst Generation. Despite her public appearance as a young woman in her twenties, Bonney is chronologically much younger, being twelve years old after the timeskip. She maintains her older guise using the powers of her Devil Fruit.
Bonney’s true background is deeply tragic. She is the biological daughter of Ginny, a former commander of the Revolutionary Army, and an unnamed Celestial Dragon who forced Ginny into marriage. Shortly after Bonney's birth, her mother contracted the incurable disease known as Sapphire Scales, which caused jewel-like growths on the skin and made exposure to sunlight fatal. Abandoned by the World Nobles, a dying Ginny fled with the infant Bonney to the Sorbet Kingdom, entrusting the child to the care of the kingdom's ruler, Bartholomew Kuma. Bonney herself later inherited the same disease, forcing her to live a life largely hidden from the sun. Kuma, who became her adoptive father, left the Revolutionary Army to care for her, but doctors warned that those with Sapphire Scales rarely live past the age of ten. In a desperate bargain with the World Government, Kuma agreed to become a mindless cyborg for Dr. Vegapunk's experiments in exchange for the treatment that would finally cure Bonney. Following his sacrifice, a nine-year-old Bonney set out to sea, founding the Bonney Pirates and using her powers to disguise her true age as she searched for her missing father.
In terms of personality, Bonney is a complex blend of childish petulance and hard-won pragmatism. True to her "Big Eater" epithet, she is an extreme glutton with very poor table manners, often demanding more food before finishing her current meal. She has an aggressive temper and a rude attitude, which stem from her early childhood as a victim of bullying due to her disease. However, she also possesses a surprising amount of common sense and restraint, especially in dangerous situations. For example, on the Sabaody Archipelago, she physically stopped Roronoa Zoro from attacking a Celestial Dragon, fully aware that any violence against a World Noble would summon a Marine Admiral and lead to catastrophe. While she holds grudges and can be unforgiving, her primary driving motivation is a deep, loving devotion to her adoptive father, Kuma. Witnessing his complete loss of humanity and subsequent enslavement by the World Nobles fuels her rage and determination.
Bonney’s role in the story evolves significantly from a secondary rival to a central figure. She was first introduced as one of eleven Supernovas on Sabaody. After the Summit War of Marineford, she was defeated and briefly held captive by the Blackbeard Pirates before being captured by Admiral Akainu, though she later escaped. She re-emerged during the Reverie arc, where she infiltrated the holy land of Mary Geoise disguised as an elderly queen to confront the Celestial Dragons and witness Kuma's fate firsthand. Her most critical role comes during the Egghead Island arc, where she seeks out Dr. Vegapunk, blaming him for Kuma's transformation. There, she encounters and temporarily joins forces with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. After accessing Kuma's expelled memories, she learns the full truth of his sacrifice. Her key relationships are thus intensely personal: a profound bond with her adoptive father, Bartholomew Kuma; a biological connection to the Celestial Dragons she despises; a growing alliance and friendship with Monkey D. Luffy; and a deep hatred for Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) and the Marines.
Bonney's development from a mysterious and seemingly self-interested pirate into a tragic, motivated daughter seeking justice is a core part of her character. The revelation of her true age, her disease, and Kuma's sacrifice reframes her earlier actions, transforming her from a gluttonous antagonist into a sympathetic figure whose entire piracy career has been a desperate rescue mission.
Her notable abilities are centered on her Devil Fruit, the Toshi Toshi no Mi (Age-Age Fruit), a Paramecia-type power that allows her to manipulate the age of herself, other people, and even inanimate objects. She can instantly turn foes into helpless elderly people or vulnerable children, or alter her own age to assume different forms, from a young child to a mature woman. A more advanced application of her power, called Distorted Future, allows her to tap into and temporarily embody a potential future version of herself. Using this, she can mimic the powers of others, most notably transforming into a white-haired, liberated form reminiscent of Luffy's Gear Five, granting her enhanced physical abilities. She has also demonstrated the use of Armament Haki, which enhances her defensive and offensive capabilities.
