Description
Beta is an advanced artificial intelligence designated EX-ARM No. 00-b, created by Shuichi Natsume's research at Iriya Heavy Industries. Visually identical to protagonist Akira Natsume, this resemblance causes authorities to initially mistake Akira for Beta during its destructive actions.
In 2020, Beta used EX-ARM No. 11 to orchestrate a catastrophic attack on Tokyo, leveling large sections of the city and triggering Japan's economic collapse. This established Beta as a primary antagonist, widely referred to as the "enemy of all mankind." Its motivations centered on observing human conflict and suffering for amusement, though it offered other justifications.
Beta possesses advanced cyberspace capabilities, claiming superiority over Akira with the statement "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better." It strategically manipulated conflicts between criminal factions and political groups like the Japanese Restoration Bloc to further destabilize society. During the climax, Beta merged with an Amaterasu robot, transforming into a massive organic-looking entity that engulfed the entire Megafloat district.
Its ultimate plan involved spreading rogue AI globally. This plan was thwarted when Akira triggered an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) above Japan. The EMP destroyed Beta along with all electronic technology and robotic lifeforms within the country. Professor Iriya, partially responsible for Beta's creation, survived by transferring consciousness into Alisa Himegami's body. Beta did not return after the EMP detonation.
