Daisuke Sakaguchi
Description
Daisuke Sakaguchi is a veteran Japanese voice actor born on October 11, 1973, in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. He is affiliated with Aoni Production, a major talent agency, and is a graduate of its affiliated training school, Aoni Juku Tokyo. Sakaguchi's career in the anime industry began in 1992, and he has since become a well-established figure known for his distinctive, high-pitched voice, which is particularly suited for young male roles.
Sakaguchi's path to becoming a voice actor was directly inspired by his childhood passion for the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. This dream was realized in an exceptional way with his debut role in 1993, when he was cast as the protagonist Üso Ewin in Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. His selection for the part was notably influenced by his physical resemblance to the character. This early leading role in a flagship series immediately launched his career. In the mid-1990s, he was also a member of the voice actor unit E.M.U. (Entertainment Music Unit), formed alongside Hikaru Midorikawa, Ryōtarō Okiabu, Nobutoshi Hayashi, and Hideo Ishikawa, which was created in conjunction with the anime Sotsugyō M.
Throughout his extensive career, Sakaguchi has portrayed a wide array of characters, often bringing energy and nuance to roles ranging from earnest youths to comedic sidekicks. While his debut was a heroic lead, he is perhaps most widely recognized for his long-running role as the bespectacled Shinpachi Shimura in the immensely popular and long-running series Gintama, a part he has played since 2006 across all its adaptations, including Gintama: The Final and the upcoming 3年Z班银八老师. This role, in particular, showcased his comedic timing and skill in "straight-man" or "tsukkomi" roles. Another significant and recurring role is Youhei Sunohara in the beloved visual novel adaptation Clannad and its sequel Clannad After Story.
His filmography demonstrates remarkable range and longevity. Some of his many other notable television anime roles include Satoshi Fukube in Hyouka, Leonardo Watch in Blood Blockade Battlefront, Viktor Licht in Fire Force, Yuzuhiko Tachibana (柚彦) in Atashin'chi, Yuki Mishima in Persona 5 the Animation, and the young Portgas D. Ace in One Piece. He has also lent his voice to a vast number of other series, including roles like Kotaro Nomura in Digimon Ghost Game, Aki Tsukishima in Aoashi, Beta in EX-ARM, Okuyasu Yokomizo in March Comes in Like a Lion, Hideto Suzuri across multiple Battle Spirits series, and many more.
Beyond anime, Sakaguchi has been active in other areas of voice acting, including video games such as the Tokimeki Memorial 4, the God Eater series, and Dynasty Warriors 8, as well as dubbing foreign films and participating in drama CDs. His contributions to the industry are marked by a consistent and reliable presence, making him a familiar and respected voice in Japanese popular culture.
