Description
Jack is a principal character and a member of the MÄR team, hailing from Pazurika Island as a 14-year-old farm boy. He is the son of Jake, a former soldier of the Cross Guard who was killed during the first War Games by Weasel, a Knight-class soldier of the Chess Piece army. Following his father's death, Jack was left with his mother, helping her tend their farm. During this time, they were routinely terrorized by the vegetarian werewolf brothers, Garu and Ruga. His life changes when he meets the protagonist, Ginta, who helps him finally stand up to the werewolves, an event that sparks their deep friendship and motivates Jack to leave home on a journey to become stronger.
In terms of personality, Jack is characterized by a combination of youthful insecurity and profound resolve. He is often described as the weakest and least experienced member of the MÄR team, yet what he lacks in innate skill, he compensates for with an unyielding determination and a strong work ethic. He does not shy away from difficult training or dangerous battles, seeing every challenge as an opportunity to grow and prove himself. A notable part of his character is his immediate and often hopeless infatuation with any cute girl he encounters, including his teammates Snow and Dorothy, which is a recurring source of humor. His appearance—black hair, distinctive whisker marks on his cheeks, and a lean build—often leads others to nickname him a monkey, a label also reinforced by his excellent climbing abilities.
Jack's primary motivation throughout the story is rooted in a desire for personal growth and revenge for his father's death. He carries his father's legacy in the form of a Weapon ARM, the Battle Shovel. Initially just a simple tool, after receiving a magic stone from Dorothy during his training in the Gate of Training, it becomes the powerful Nature ARM known as the Earth Scoop. This ARM allows him to manipulate the earth and plants. His signature technique, Earth Beans, involves scattering seeds on the ground and instantly sprouting them into massive vines for both offensive and defensive purposes. He also develops a technique called Magic Mushrooms, which uses hallucinogenic spores to incapacitate opponents. Later in the story, he acquires two Guardian ARMs from Caldia: Mehitos, a carnivorous plant-like creature summoned from the earth, and Kikazoku Fire, a powerful fire spirit with a childlike form.
As a core member of the MÄR team, Jack participates directly in the War Games against the Chess Pieces. His journey of development is marked by several key battles. He suffers a humiliating loss in the first round to Pano, only to defeat her in a rematch using his Magic Mushroom technique, leading to her developing romantic feelings for him. His most significant battle is in the final round against Weasel, the very Knight who murdered his father. In this fight, he overcomes the powerful plant-based ARMs of his enemy and ultimately avenges his father by using the Kikazoku Fire Guardian ARM to incinerate Weasel's signature tree, a feat that proves he has surpassed his father.
Jack's relationships are central to his character arc. His bond with Ginta is a pivotal one, as Ginta is the catalyst who helps him break free from his cowardice and begin his heroic journey. He forms a strong camaraderie with his other teammates, including Alviss, Snow, and Nanashi. He receives crucial training from Dorothy, who teaches him how to use a magic stone, and from the former Cross Guard leader, Alan. His rivalry and eventual confrontation with Weasel represent the culmination of his personal quest for vengeance. By the story's end, Jack has completed his emotional transformation. He not only defeats his father's killer but also fulfills his lifelong dream of using his Earth Beans to grow a plant that stretches all the way into the sky. In the final resolution, he achieves a peaceful life at home with his mother, his former enemies the Rogelu brothers, and his love interest, Pano.
