Near, whose real name is Nate River, is the younger of L's two successors and was raised at Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England. He is introduced in the Death Note: New Generation web series as a boy from Wammy's House who later becomes the head of the Special Provision for Kira, an American task force formed to investigate the Kira case after L's death. Near is characterized by his remarkably calm and stable temperament, often described as even more composed than L. He is pragmatic and devious, willing to use tactics that skirt the edges of legality because he values results above all else.
