Description
JPS-19, often called by the nickname Ikku, is a supporting character in the anime series RobiHachi. He is the household support robot owned by the protagonist, Robby Yarge. His model name is a playful reference to the Japanese author Jippensha Ikku, who wrote the classic comedic travelogue Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige, the primary literary inspiration for the series. The numbers in his name, nineteen, also relate to the author’s pen name, as "ikku" can mean "one nine".
In terms of physical appearance, JPS-19 is designed to be compact and cute, with a notable design feature resembling rabbit-like ears. Despite this endearing and almost toy-like exterior, his personality is a stark contrast. He is characterized by an exceptionally sharp and sarcastic tongue. Throughout the journey, he frequently expresses disdain and exasperation towards his owner, Robby, whom he clearly views as incompetent and hopeless. His commentary on the situations Robby gets into is often blunt, critical, and serves as a grounding, cynical voice amidst the chaos.
JPS-19’s primary motivation and role in the story are tied directly to his function as Robby’s robotic assistant. He accompanies Robby on his impulsive and poorly planned journey to the legendary planet Iskandar. While Robby and his accidental travel companion Hatchi Kita often drive the action with their optimistic or naive decisions, JPS-19 remains the reluctant tag-along, performing his duties while verbally lamenting his master's poor judgment. He is a constant presence on the spaceship, acting as the straight man to Robby's foolishness and providing technical or domestic support as needed.
His most significant relationship is, without a doubt, with his master Robby. This dynamic is one of mutual dependence but is heavily weighted by JPS-19’s open disdain. He seems to have a very low opinion of Robby, viewing him as a failure and a nuisance, yet he remains by his side, fulfilling his programming as a support unit. He also interacts with Hatchi Kita, often serving as a fellow observer to the absurdity of Robby’s actions. While he does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation throughout the series, his caustic personality remains a consistent and defining trait, and his presence provides much of the show's humor. He is the indispensable, grumpy little robot who keeps the main duo tethered to reality, however reluctantly.
As a robot designed for domestic support, his notable abilities include performing household chores and managing the internal environment of the spaceship. He does not typically participate in combat or pilot the ship's hidden mecha, the Hizakuriger, instead acting as an observer or commentator. His primary function is logistical and emotional, the latter expressed through his constant stream of cynical remarks.
