Description
Hayashi Hidesada, a hereditary Oda clan retainer, first served Oda Nobuhide before transitioning to guardian and tutor for young Oda Nobunaga at Nagoya Castle. He administered the castle until Nobunaga’s 1546 coming-of-age ceremony.

After Nobuhide’s 1551 death, Hidesada grew troubled by Nobunaga’s unconventional behavior, clashing with clan expectations. His dissatisfaction drove him to covertly support Nobunaga’s younger brother, Oda Nobuyuki, as a preferable heir. In 1556, Hidesada and his brother Michitomo joined Shibata Katsuie’s rebellion against Nobunaga at Inō, backing Nobuyuki’s faction. Though defeated, Nobunaga pardoned Hidesada and reinstated him.

Post-pardon, Hidesada continued serving the Oda in administrative and diplomatic roles, avoiding frontline combat. He operated as a bureaucrat, supervising official meetings and tea ceremonies, and later mentored Nobunaga’s heir, Oda Nobutada, after Nobunaga’s 1575 retirement. Despite sustained loyalty, Nobunaga banished Hidesada abruptly in 1580, invoking the 1556 rebellion as grounds—despite pardoning it decades prior. This suggested a pretext to purge older retainers perceived as less capable.

Exiled, Hidesada moved to Kyoto, adopted the name Nanbu Shōri or Nanbu Tajima-no-Kami, and died two months later at age 68. The anime highlights his involvement in the Oda clan’s internal strife, particularly opposing Nobunaga during the succession dispute and enduring subsequent political sidelining.
