His reign encounters a major crisis in *Sukkiri♪* when Baku accidentally releases mysterious black notes in a flower field, spreading dark power residue across Mariland and the human world. This triggers a high court trial resulting in King Zou being forcibly removed from the throne by a majority vote, deemed unfit due to incompetence in handling the disaster, leaving Mariland leaderless until new candidates emerge later.

Throughout the series, King Zou demonstrates the ability to sense threats to Mariland, such as the Spirit of Dark Power. He acts to protect the realm, sending My Melody to the human world in the first season to capture Kuromi and prevent the spirit's revival. He later upgrades My Melody's Melody Takt to the Hyper Melody Takt in *KuruKuru Shuffle!* to enhance her capabilities, though this weapon is destroyed in *Sukkiri♪*'s final battle and subsequently repaired.

His personality includes eccentric traits; he owns a television receiving human-world broadcasts, leading to frequent pop-culture references. He also develops a recurring crush on Kanade Yumeno, Uta's older sister, which often provokes Queen Rumi to summon lightning strikes to chastise him.

In the prequel season *Kirara★*, King Zou personally invites the human child Kirara Hoshizuki to Mariland to witness the Wishing Star event, showcasing his role in maintaining Mariland's traditions, though the star's destruction during the event sets off the season's central conflict.
