Description
Cusack is a high-ranking member of the Demon Clan who appears in the third season of the anime. His origins are tied to the Original Demon, a powerful entity created to serve as the Demon King's deputy. After this Original Demon attempted a failed rebellion, the Demon King split its body and soul into two separate beings as punishment, and from this division, Cusack and his counterpart Chandler were born. Despite this schism, both remained among the most powerful demons, second only to the Demon King himself.
Cusack was assigned the crucial role of being the personal combat instructor and master to Prince Zeldris, the younger son of the Demon King. He served in this capacity for thousands of years, forging an unbreakable bond of loyalty to the prince. Cusack rarely participated in the ancient Holy War and was eventually sealed away along with the rest of his clan. After three millennia, when the seal began to weaken, Cusack and Chandler were able to escape and immediately sought out Zeldris to offer their services once more.
In terms of personality, Cusack is characterized by a composed, calm, and strategic demeanor. He acts as a dignified, almost butler-like attendant to Zeldris, though it is noted his hospitality leaves something to be desired, specifically his poorly brewed tea. This cool exterior, however, is a facade for a deeply obsessive and fiercely protective nature. His loyalty to Zeldris is his single defining motivation; he practically worships the prince and lives vicariously through his potential. He is convinced that Zeldris, not his older brother Meliodas, is the rightful heir to the Demon King. Any threat to Zeldris instantly shatters Cusack's calm, unleashing a cold and brutal fury. He also possesses a peculiar vanity, taking immense pride in his long, straight mustache, which he proclaims to be the finest in the demon realm, and he becomes visibly enraged if it is damaged.
Cusack's primary role in the story is as a guardian and enforcer for Zeldris's ambitions. After the Holy War resumes, he and Chandler pledge to fill the power void left by the defeated Ten Commandments. He is tasked with protecting Zeldris and, at the prince's command, helps guard the cocoon in which Meliodas absorbs the commandments to gain immense power. Cusack is also a formidable antagonist to the series' heroes, engaging directly with Merlin, Escanor, and the Archangel Ludociel.
His key relationships define his entire existence. His relationship with Zeldris is one of absolute, unquestioning servitude and paternal affection. Conversely, he shares a deep yet complex bond with Chandler. While they are comrades who trained the two royal princes and work well together in battle, they also maintain a rivalry, each believing their respective student is superior. Ultimately, given that they originated from the same being, they acknowledge their shared nature and have the ability to merge back into the Original Demon.
Cusack's development follows a tragic arc of devotion leading to destruction. His desire to see Zeldris become the next Demon King becomes so consuming that he resorts to extreme measures. He believes that forcing Zeldris to absorb more commandments will elevate his power, but this miscalculation backfires catastrophically. Instead of empowering his master, Cusack's actions inadvertently turn Zeldris into the host body for the Demon King, erasing the prince's consciousness. Realizing the horror of what he has done, Cusack is ultimately destroyed by the very Demon King he sought to serve, a victim of his own fanatical loyalty.
Notable abilities include his incredible strength, with his power level reaching 168,000 when fully unleashed. He is an unparalleled master of dual-wielding swords. His signature magical ability is called Resonant or Resonance. With this power, Cusack can lock eyes with a target to forcefully synchronize their movements with his own. He demonstrated the terrifying extent of this ability on Arthur Pendragon, forcing the young king to stab himself with his own sacred sword, Excalibur, from a great distance. When faced with truly powerful opponents, Cusack can also manifest his true demonic form, growing draconic wings and undergoing a physical transformation that dramatically amplifies his combat prowess.
