Description
Hypnos serves as the god of sleep, acting as a loyal subordinate to Hades, ruler of the underworld. He is the twin brother of Thanatos, the god of death, sharing a close association despite their contrasting natures; Hypnos is calm, strategic, and reserved, while Thanatos is impulsive and arrogant. Their origins lie in Greek mythology, adapted into this narrative.

Physically, Hypnos possesses long golden hair and golden eyes, distinguishing him from his silver-haired, silver-eyed brother. A distinctive hexagram or pentagram mark adorns his forehead. His surplice, an armor-like garment featuring motifs of wings and feathers reflecting classical Greek art, is primarily gold and black in the anime adaptation but purple in the original manga. A single wing sprouts from the left side of his head.

Sealed for 243 years within a box marked by Athena's Seal, Hypnos gained freedom when the three-year-old Pandora, driven by curiosity, opened it. Following their release, Hypnos and Thanatos informed Pandora of Hades' imminent resurrection and appointed her commander of his 108 Specters. Hypnos dwells in Elysion, often depicted alongside nymphs and his brother while awaiting Hades' commands.

Hypnos wields divine powers through the Big Will, an Olympian-level cosmos. His signature technique, Eternal Drowsiness, allows him to induce permanent or temporary sleep in any living being, including divine entities. He demonstrated this by forcing Athena into slumber and imprisoning her within the Sacred Amphora to drain her blood slowly. This power can be countered by exposure to divine blood or by opponents reaching extreme cosmic levels, such as saints attaining the God Cloth state.

During the Elysion conflict, Hypnos intervened to prevent Thanatos from shedding blood in the sacred realm, subduing Athena non-lethally. He later sensed the resurgence of God Cloths among the Bronze Saints and witnessed Thanatos' defeat by Pegasus Seiya. Engaging the remaining saints, Hypnos used Eternal Drowsiness on Andromeda Shun and initially overpowered Phoenix Ikki. Ultimately defeated by Dragon Shiryū and Cygnus Hyōga in their God Cloths, Hypnos warned the saints of Hades' true awakening before perishing.

In the 18th-century spin-off *The Lost Canvas*, Hypnos descended to Earth as a priest in an Italian church. He manipulated Alone, Hades' vessel, by exposing him to a transformative painting to facilitate Hades' influence, and guided Pandora and Alone in overseeing the Specter army. After Thanatos was sealed, Hypnos dispatched dream deities and confronted Hakurei, a survivor of a previous holy war. Hakurei's sacrificial technique defeated and sealed Hypnos within the same box used centuries prior, where he remained until the modern era.
