Description
Dark King Vearn, supreme ruler of the Dark Army and primary antagonist, originated as a darkling. He ascended to become the infernal god of the Underworld. Millennia of existence fueled his resentment toward the gods for banishing darklings underground while allowing humanity sunlight, the source of life. This drives his goal: destroy the Surface World, redirect the sun's light to the Underworld, and establish himself as its true god.
His background includes a protracted rivalry with Velzar, the Abyss Dragon King. This culminated in a truce: whichever ruler conquered the Surface World first would command the other's allegiance. To achieve immortality for this endeavor, Vearn split his body using a secret spell. One half, his youthful physical form, was preserved under the Secret Spell of Frozen Time, recast periodically. The other half, his aged body, retained his mind and accumulated magical power over eons. He entrusted his frozen form to the shadowy entity Myst; Myst's possession of it created Mystvearn, who became Vearn's bodyguard and commander. Vearn also accepted Killvearn, a subordinate sent by Velzar under the guise of a truce gift but secretly tasked with assassinating Vearn should his plans fail.
Vearn's appearance evolves across three key forms. Initially concealed behind a veil, his elderly form presents an imposing yet frail frame with white hair, a pointed beard, a third eye (the Sovereign Eye) on his forehead, curved horns, and ornate robes and crown. His true form, after merging with his preserved youthful body, becomes muscular and towering, featuring silver hair, straightened horns, and simplified armor. His ultimate transformation, the Sovereign Rock King, manifests as a colossal, rocky monstrosity encasing his organic body. This irreversible state grants immense physical power at the cost of his magical versatility.
Personality-wise, Vearn embodies a social Darwinist philosophy. He asserts "might makes right" governs all existence except humanity, which he views as deluded by false ideals like justice and hope. He exhibits strategic patience, scheming for thousands of years while cultivating resources and contingencies, such as embedding a continent-destroying Black Core within Hadlar. Though he allows subordinates three chances to redeem failures and acknowledges strength in allies or enemies, he ultimately sees them as expendable tools. His love for chess reflects his manipulative tactics, yet he hypocritically despises "cheating" despite employing underhanded methods himself.
Vearn's abilities are formidable. As an archmage, he casts spells instantaneously and at amplified potency, particularly excelling in fire-based magic like *Kaiser Phoenix*. His *Staff of Edacity* converts mana into physical strength, enabling him to shatter orichalcum, though it drains mana continuously. His Sovereign Eye can evolve monsters, imprison foes in jewels, or unleash regenerative capabilities, including surviving with only one of his three hearts intact. After merging with his youthful body, he gains martial prowess, using techniques like *Phoenix Wing* to deflect powerful attacks and *Calamity End* for devastating strikes. His final Sovereign Rock King form trades spellcasting for titanic strength, flight, and energy beams.
Throughout the story, Vearn orchestrates the Dark Army's resurgence, resurrecting Hadlar as its commander and manipulating figures like Baran through their hatred. He remains shrouded for the narrative's first half, observing battles and dispensing calculated punishments or opportunities. After Hadlar's repeated failures, Vearn reveals his trust by gifting him orichalcum chess pieces to create the Royal Guards. He later detonates the Black Core within Hadlar to eliminate threats, an act that spurs Hadlar's betrayal. Vearn directly confronts the Disciples of Avan in his palace, overpowering them psychologically and physically until Hadlar intervenes.
In the final arc, he merges with his youthful form to battle Dai. Dai's dual Dragon Crests, inherited from Baran, elevate him to near-equal footing. Pushed to the brink, Vearn tears out his Sovereign Eye to assume the Sovereign Rock King form. Despite its overwhelming power, Dai exploits the transformation's instability, ultimately defeating him. Vearn's remains are ejected into space, hurtling toward the sun he coveted.
