Description
Matoriv fought alongside hero Avan 15 years prior to the main events, participating in the defeat of the Dark Lord Hadlar. As part of Avan's party with Leira and Roka, he confronted Hadlar's forces and contributed to the victory at Hadlar's Underground Palace, where Roka perished. Later serving as an advisor to the Papnica king, he grew disillusioned by humanity's perceived selfishness and ingratitude, leading him to retire into seclusion.

Renowned as the world's most powerful mage, Matoriv's ability to cast offensive and healing spells technically qualifies him as a Sage. He rejects this title due to its perceived elitism, preferring the self-styled designation "Grand Sorcerer." His magical expertise includes mastery over the Frizz and Crack spell lines, support spells like Zoom and Levizoom, and original creations such as Medroa. He is one of the few humans capable of casting the advanced Kasizz spell. Earlier experimentation with forbidden monster magic negatively impacted his health, shortening his lifespan and causing chronic issues, though he lived to an advanced age.

Physically, Matoriv is an elderly man who wears a mage's robe and hat and always carries a staff. In his youth, he wore a Sorcerer Cape and wielded a Shining Staff, later gifted to Popp. He exhibits an eccentric, grumpy, and arrogant personality, initially refusing to aid Dai's party due to his misanthropic worldview. However, recognizing Avan's influence in Dai and learning of Avan's demise prompted him to assist. Matoriv is also noted for inappropriate advances toward Maam, her mother Leira, and Aimi, with the 2020 anime adaptation toning down these elements.

During the Valge Island arc, Matoriv rescued Dai's party from Flazzard's forces and devised a plan to destroy the Dark Fire and Ice Spires that nullified their powers. He took Popp as his apprentice, subjecting him to a grueling training regimen harsher than Avan's methods. This included forcing Popp to master Zoom under life-threatening conditions to emphasize a mage's role in protecting comrades. He later guided Popp to abandon monster-derived spells like Five Flare Fingers Bomb in favor of human-appropriate magic, teaching him the Frizz Cracker spell capable of destroying orichalcum.

In later events, Matoriv retrieved Avan's Book of Avan from the Carl library ruins and delivered it to Dai's party. He intervened to save Popp from Zaboera and Hadlar using Frizz Cracker, further straining his health. His mentorship continued as he refined Popp's abilities, pushing him toward surpassing him as a Grand Sorcerer.

In the mobile game *A Hero's Bonds*, Matoriv is a playable ice-based mage obtainable during the "Cold-Headed Grand Sorcerer" event. His abilities include slowing charge time by 25% and temporarily boosting it by 275% after using special moves. Stats highlight his magical focus, with Magical Attack at 495 and Magical Defence at 180. Later updates expanded his repertoire to include fire-based attacks and Medroa. His "Soul" traits enhance fire/ice damage, magical attack, and weak-point targeting.
