Description
Forged from millennia of hatred and spirits belonging to darklings and dragons within the Underworld, the spectral entity Mystvearn, originally named Myst, is composed of Dark Aura. He serves as Vearn's Shadow Vizier and commands the Shadow Legion within the Dark Army. His paramount duty involves safeguarding Vearn's younger body, separated from his older self and sealed under the Secret Spell of Frozen Time to halt aging and prevent injury. Mystvearn possesses this form, concealing it beneath the white hooded Shadow Raiment cloak, which projects a shadowy, wraith-like visage marked by glowing orbs for eyes and torso.
Characterized by profound silence, Mystvearn rarely speaks, preferring gestures for communication. He demonstrates fierce, unquestioning loyalty to Vearn. Despite his detached nature, he respects formidable strength and determination, evidenced by his admiration for Hadlar after Hadlar sacrificed immortality for power. This respect motivates Mystvearn to aid Hadlar discreetly, such as manipulating Gangadia to complete the ritual reviving Hadlar centuries early. Conversely, he despises cowardice and treachery, openly threatening figures like Zaboera. His own inability to grow stronger independently fuels envy towards those who can, driving his ambition to possess powerful bodies like Hyunckel's. He mentors Hyunckel in Dark Aura techniques specifically to prepare the body for eventual claiming.
Mystvearn's power revolves around Dark Aura manipulation. He wields techniques like Dark Puppetry Aura Hand to control opponents via ethereal strings and the Aura Decimation Field to immobilize multiple targets. His signature attack, Byut Deathstringer, extends his fingers into piercing spears. While possessing Vearn's time-frozen body, he gains immense physical strength, enabling techniques like Phoenix Wing, a spell-reflecting palm strike, and near-invulnerability where wounds vanish instantly. Light-based attacks can expel him from hosts, revealing light aura as his primary weakness. In his true spectral form, lacking a physical body, he regenerates damage and relies on Dark Aura to counter light-based threats.
Key events define his arc: orchestrating the Sovereign Rock Castle's attack on the Royal Summit and trapping heroes within his Aura Decimation Field; retaliating fiercely when Hyunckel exposes his face during this battle, revealing volatile pride; later discarding the Shadow Raiment in the Field of Death to unleash Vearn's body's full power, nearly overwhelming Dai's party before intervention; experiencing visible dismay upon discovering the Black Core implanted in Hadlar, ensuring Hadlar's eventual loss. In the final arc, he merges with Vearn's consciousness to form a unified entity, ultimately defeated by Dai and allies.
Beyond the main series, Mystvearn appears in spin-offs and games. *Dragon Quest Tact* features him as a recruitable unit with abilities reflecting Dark Aura mastery, including Byut Deathstringer and the Secret Spell of Frozen Time as a damage-nullifying perk. In *Dragon Quest Walk*, he acts as a mega-boss employing Dark Puppetry and Decimation Field. *Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional* presents him as a post-game playable monster, combinable with other entities to create Sovereign Rock King Vearn. These appearances consistently highlight his spectral nature, possession mechanics, and signature techniques.
