Description
Dai Maoh Vearn, also known as the Dark King or Great Demon Lord, reigns as the primary antagonist. Originating as a darkling, Vearn ascended to become the infernal god of the Underworld after his kind were confined there. This displacement bred deep resentment toward humanity, who basked in sunlight—a resource Vearn coveted for his own realm. His millennia-long rivalry with Velzar, the Abyss Dragon King, culminated in a truce where each would independently pursue dominion over the surface world, with the victor claiming the loser's allegiance.
Seeking immortality for his plans, Vearn divided his body using a secret spell. One half, preserved through the Secret Spell of Frozen Time cast every solar eclipse, retained eternal youth. The other half aged but accumulated vast magical power. Vearn entrusted the youthful half to the monster Myst, creating Mystvearn, who became his bodyguard. He knowingly accepted Killvearn, a disguised assassin sent by Velzar, viewing the potential betrayal as a calculated challenge.
Vearn meticulously built resources and armies. He revived the defeated Dark Lord Hadlar 15 years prior, enhancing his body and appointing him Supreme Commander of the Dark Army. He manipulated the grieving Dragon Knight Baran, exploiting his hatred for humanity to recruit him. Vearn established the mobile Sovereign Rock Castle as the army's headquarters and embedded a Black Core within Hadlar—a continental-scale explosive failsafe he could detonate remotely. This contingency revealed his willingness to sacrifice subordinates, ultimately driving Hadlar to betray him.
Initially concealed in shadow, Vearn projected power through commanders like Hadlar, Crocodine, and Flazzard. He observed key battles, such as Baran's fight against Dai, and intervened strategically—upgrading Hadlar's body after failures. His patience included a three-opportunity policy for subordinates, though he scorned repeated incompetence. When Hadlar achieved Superior Being status, Vearn revealed himself as a frail elderly figure, securing Hadlar's loyalty by gifting orichalcum chess pieces to create the Royal Guards. However, activating Hadlar's Black Core during a confrontation with Baran and Dai exposed his disregard for allies, causing Hadlar's defection.
Vearn's powers stemmed from millennia of magical cultivation. His third eye, the Sovereign Eye, stored immense energy and could induce monster evolution. He mastered spells like Frizz, his basic version surpassing others' ultimate attacks, and techniques such as Kaiser Phoenix—a fiery bird manifestation of Kafrizz. His Staff of Edacity converted mana into physical strength but drained magic continuously. Defensive capabilities included a refined Bounce spell and regenerative abilities allowing him to survive multiple fatal injuries via three hearts.
After merging with his youthful half, Vearn transformed into a taller, muscular demon. This form amplified his physical prowess, enabling techniques like Calamity End (a shockwave attack) and Phoenix Wing (a deflection skill). He could imprison weakened foes in jewels. His final transformation, Sovereign Supreme, occurred when he destroyed his Sovereign Eye, releasing its energy irreversibly. This monstrous, rock-armored form granted titanic strength, flight, and energy beams but sacrificed his original abilities.
Vearn embodied social Darwinism, believing power dictated natural law and scorning humanity's "reason" as hypocrisy. He deemed surface dwellers unworthy of sunlight and planned to annihilate them to reclaim the sun for the Underworld. Despite his cruelty, he displayed strategic patience and a love for chess, likening warfare to the game. He respected strength regardless of origin, praising adversaries like Hyunckel for their ferocity before his reformation. His sadistic enjoyment of despair and patronizing deconstructions of opponents' morals highlighted his malevolence.
In the final conflict, Vearn confronted Dai and Popp directly. After his initial form was overwhelmed, he fused with his youthful body and later became the Sovereign Supreme. Despite his immense power, he was ultimately defeated by their combined efforts, ending his reign.
Beyond the main series, Vearn appeared in spin-off media like the mobile game *Dragon Quest Tact* as a playable S-rank unit, retaining his signature abilities such as auto-revival and spell reflection.
