ONA
Description
Momoko Asuka is a central character in Ojamajo Doremi: Owarai Gekijō, having originally joined the main group in the third television season of the broader franchise. She is a Japanese girl who spent much of her childhood living in New York City, where her father worked as an architect and her mother as a photographer. Because her family primarily spoke English at home, she returned to Japan with very limited proficiency in Japanese, which initially made communication difficult. Her role in the narrative builds on her established history as a former witch apprentice under the late Majo Monroe, a bond that ended in personal tragedy when her mentor passed away. In the comedy-focused world of Owarai Gekijō, she retains the core traits that defined her in the earlier series: a loud, hyper, and easily excited personality, combined with a blunt and occasionally blunt manner of speaking. She is highly passionate and enjoys helping others, often diving headfirst into situations with boundless energy. Her motivation within the group is driven by a strong desire to contribute her skills in baking and sweets-making, a talent she developed under Majo Monroe and which made her invaluable when the Maho-do was remodeled into a patisserie. She is especially close to Doremi Harukaze, the leader of the group, as both share an outgoing and expressive nature that helps them understand each other despite initial language barriers. Over time, her relationships deepen with all the other witch apprentices, and she later becomes one of the five surrogate mothers to the magical baby Hana, who affectionately calls her Momo. Her character development is marked by overcoming the emotional wound left by Majo Monroe's death and gradually regaining her confidence as a witch and a friend. Notably, she has a distinctive habit of using English words and phrases in her speech, and she also possesses a peculiar, enthusiastic appreciation for Japanese culture, which she tends to interpret in wildly inaccurate ways. Among her notable abilities are her excellent baking and pastry-making skills, as well as her proficiency in playing the guitar, which she learned from her best friend in New York. Her magical spell as a witch apprentice is "Perutan Petton Pararira Pon," and her favored instrument is a guitar-shaped magical item. In Owarai Gekijō, all these elements are carried over into short, comedic skits that play up her energetic, occasionally clueless, and always well-meaning nature.
