Description
Gray is introduced as the quiet and devoted assistant to Lord El-Melloi II at the Clock Tower, the prestigious center of magecraft in London. Her real name is Gray, though she is often referred to simply by that name. She serves as a bodyguard and aide to her master, helping him with various tasks and investigations while also attending his classes. Her background is deeply tragic and unusual. She was born in a small, remote village in Wales that served as a graveyard for heroes, and her family clan had a singular, obsessive purpose. For generations, they worked to create a vessel capable of holding the soul of King Arthur, aiming to revive the legendary king in the flesh. Gray was created to be this vessel, the physical body for King Arthur's reincarnation. As she grew, her face began to change, eventually becoming an exact replica of the king. Consequently, the villagers, including her own mother, ceased to see her as an individual named Gray and instead revered and treated her as the body of the king, waiting for the day her own soul would be erased to make room for the hero's spirit.

This upbringing left Gray with a deep-seated fear and hatred of her own face, as it was not truly hers. She feels her own identity is tenuous and has difficulty understanding herself as a person separate from the king she was meant to house. Her rescue came in the form of Lord El-Melloi II, who visited her village seeking a weapon for the Holy Grail War. He instead took Gray under his wing, becoming the first person to treat her as an individual rather than a tool. To hide her face, which brings back painful memories of the Fourth Holy Grail War for him, he instructs her to always wear a hooded cloak, a garment that has since become her signature.

In terms of personality, Gray is defined by her loyalty, quiet diligence, and a profound sense of being out of place in the world. She is introverted, shy, and socially awkward, having been isolated her entire childhood. She often retreats behind her master during conversations or hides behind her hood to avoid scrutiny. Despite her reserved nature, she is deeply kind and has a strong will to protect those she cares about, especially Lord El-Melloi II. She is not unintelligent, but her sheltered upbringing in the countryside means she can be overwhelmed by the complex and political environment of the Clock Tower, often apologizing for not understanding things. She is also known to have an ironic fear of ghosts and spirits, a phobia rooted in her natural susceptibility as a grave keeper to be influenced by their negative emotions. Her closest companion is a sentient Mystic Code named Add, a sarcastic and talkative cube that usually resides in a birdcage. Add serves as both a teacher and a teasing foil to her serious demeanor.

Gray's primary motivation is to stay by Lord El-Melloi II's side and protect him, both out of gratitude for rescuing her and because she believes she has found a purpose as his partner and guardian. She is intensely loyal and worries about his health and his obsessive quest to participate in the Holy Grail War. In the story, her role is that of the faithful assistant and physical protector, much like a Watson to his Sherlock Holmes, though she is the one who handles most of the direct combat. While her master uses his deductive reasoning, Gray uses her unique abilities to fight spiritual entities, specters, and even Servants.

Her key relationships define her development. Her bond with Lord El-Melloi II is the most central; she refers to him as "Master" and is devoted to him, though she is not above dragging him out of bed or chiding his poor habits. She has a complex relationship with Reines El-Melloi Archisorte, her master's adoptive sister, who often teases and involves Gray in her schemes, yet also shows a genuine respect and protectiveness toward her. Her development throughout the series involves her slowly coming to terms with her identity. While she may always carry the burden of her face, her experiences and the people who see her for who she is help her take small steps away from being merely a vessel for a ghost. A key moment of this is when she is forced to confront a Servant and must decide for herself, not as a tool, what she is fighting for.

Gray's most notable abilities are tied to the holy lance Rhongomyniad, the Noble Phantasm of King Arthur, which has been passed down through her family. The lance's power is sealed within Add, her talking Mystic Code. In its standard combat form, Add transforms into a large, multi-form scythe that Gray wields with superhuman agility and speed. The scythe can consume magical energy and spiritual bodies, making her a natural enemy to ghosts and Servants. In its true form, Gray can release Rhongomyniad as a pillar of immense light with devastating destructive power, though doing so places a tremendous strain on her body. Her inherent nature as a grave keeper also grants her a deep connection to death and spirits, allowing her to understand the true nature of the deceased with a single glance.
