TV-Series
Description
Doc is a middle-aged Research Sorcerer affiliated with the Artemis Institute. His primary occupation involves the study of Nemesis behavior and biology, often traveling to collect the remains of dead Nemesis or capturing them alive to bring back for research, a task for which he receives compensation. This work has led him to partner with other sorcerers, eventually making him the tracker accompanying Seth and Mélie on their journey.
In terms of appearance, Doc has tousled brown hair, large eyes, and a distinctive small mustache that splits into two points. His attire typically consists of a striped shirt with black sling pants and his signature double tie, which he wears because he believes a single tie represents seriousness while two signify that he is extremely serious. A unique aspect of his existence is his infection, which manifests physically without clear explanation. Periodically, his outer shell dies and he molts, transforming internally into a chubby baby, akin to a snake shedding its skin but rejuvenating. This transformation is only physical; he retains his memory, speech, and knowledge throughout the process, after which he regrows at an accelerated rate compared to normal growth, sometimes aided by growth potions he tests to manage his condition.
Doc possesses a reserved, introverted, and deeply timid personality. He much prefers a stable, organized, and safe life over the uncertainty of adventure and epic battles, displaying a notable lack of self-confidence that often leads him to avoid difficult situations rather than confront them. This fearfulness makes him prone to stress and anxiety, especially when faced with danger or trouble, but despite these flaws, he remains an endearing figure whose clumsiness and reliability make him a companion others can count on. His motivations are largely practical and self-preserving, as he researches Nemesis to contribute to combating them without relying on the powers of a combat-focused sorcerer, aiming to find solutions through study and intelligence. Over time, his role evolves as he is drawn into greater adventures, and he becomes motivated not just by survival but by loyalty to his friends, learning to use artifacts like the Pen Draig armor and the Book of Truth, a magical book capable of revealing truthful answers to questions posed to it.
Doc's key relationships are central to his development. He first met Seth in Pompo Hills, where Seth mistakenly attacked his ship, leading Doc to initially see the young sorcerer as a source of endless trouble whom he tried desperately to avoid. However, with time, he grows accustomed to Seth's recklessness and comes to see him as a close friend, even as Seth often teases him for his cowardly nature. Before Seth joined, Doc worked alongside Mélie, though due to her personality-altering infection, he often communicated with her solely by letter even when living in the same city to avoid her unpredictable changes. Despite this, they function effectively as a team, hunting Nemesis for rewards and information. Doc also harbors romantic feelings for Miss Melba, a waitress and ventriloquist at the Kettle Coffee café on the Artemis Institute, but his overwhelming timidity prevents him from ever confessing his affection. He also has a complicated relationship with Grimm, initially encountering him as an enemy during a mission in Rumble Town, and even after misunderstandings are cleared, Doc remains fearful of him, especially after his own physical transformation into a child.
Throughout the story, Doc undergoes significant development. While initially defined by his self-interest and attempts to avoid risk, episodes such as being kidnapped by a sewer monster reveal a warmer side when he befriends his monstrous captor, showing compassion that makes him more likable. As the series progresses, he is forced to partake in dangerous adventures against his will and gradually becomes braver, going through many perils to help his companions and protect the magical world. His intellectual role as the brains of the group becomes more pronounced, and he learns to harness artifacts like the Pen Draig armor, which even experienced knights could not wield, demonstrating untapped potential. His notable abilities include a strong affinity with Fantasia, allowing him to sense Nemesis presence and resist their influence, as well as his academic knowledge of magic and science, which fills a crucial support role in Seth's party.
