TV-Series
Description
Mutsu is the second-in-command of the merchant fleet Kaientai, though in practice she is the one who truly runs the organization. Her nominal superior, Sakamoto Tatsuma, is frequently absent without explanation, leaving Mutsu to manage the company’s operations, make strategic decisions, and clean up the messes that result from Sakamoto’s impulsive behavior. She has even installed a homing device in his pistol so that she can locate him when he disappears.

Mutsu’s personality stands in stark contrast to Sakamoto’s carefree and often foolish nature. She is calm, collected, serious, and rarely shows emotion. Her facial expressions are minimal, and she speaks with a distinctive Tosa dialect. Despite her reserved exterior, she possesses a sharp tongue and a strong sense of justice, and she does not hesitate to scold Sakamoto when he acts recklessly. Her crew respects her as a capable and reliable leader.

Born into the Yato clan, a race of aliens known for their immense physical strength and fierce combat instincts, Mutsu possesses the typical Yato abilities. She is a formidable fighter, relying on both her natural strength and her skill with firearms, particularly pistols. Her Yato heritage was once identified by Gintoki Sakata after he observed her fighting style and extraordinary physical prowess. Like other Yato, she is vulnerable to direct sunlight, though this is not a prominent trait in her appearances.

Mutsu’s background is rooted in the criminal underworld. She is the daughter of the admiral of the Chidori, a group of space pirates that dealt in slave trading. At the age of fourteen, she became the vice-commander of the second division of the Chidori. After her father’s death, she learned that the remaining pirates intended to kill her. When Sakamoto Tatsuma took over the Chidori’s ships, Mutsu joined his newly formed Kaientai, leaving her past as a space pirate behind.

Her role in the story is primarily as a supporting character and ally to the main cast. She is a key member of the Kaientai, which functions as a trading and transport company but also becomes involved in larger conflicts. Mutsu’s loyalty to Sakamoto is deep, though she rarely expresses it overtly. Their relationship is built on mutual trust and respect, with Mutsu often acting as the pragmatic foil to Sakamoto’s idealism and eccentricity. She also has nominal ties to Umibouzu, the legendary Yato hunter, who once took her as a student.

Mutsu’s character develops very gradually. She begins as a quiet, efficient subordinate but later reveals more of her emotional depth and her commitment to her new family in the Kaientai. Her past as a pirate and the betrayal she experienced shape her cautious and distrustful nature, but her time with Sakamoto and the crew allows her to open up slightly. Notable moments include her single-handed destruction of an escape pod containing the pirates who had betrayed her, demonstrating both her Yato strength and her personal closure.

Her abilities extend beyond combat. She is highly intelligent and capable of strategic planning, essential for running the Kaientai effectively. Her physical capabilities are on par with other Yato warriors, and she can overpower most ordinary opponents with ease. She prefers to use a pistol in battle, often combining gunplay with her natural speed and strength.

Mutsu is a rare female Yato character in the series, and her design is characterized by her medium-length brown hair, yellow or light brown eyes, and a signature sedge hat that she frequently wears. She is petite in stature, standing 158 cm tall, but her presence is commanding due to her composed demeanor and formidable reputation.
