Description
Akira Ono is the heir to the wealthy and influential Ōno Zaibatsu. She has long dark purple hair, which appears black in the manga, and striking ruby eyes. From elementary through high school, she consistently wears a distinctive purple dress with puffy sleeves, ruffles on the chest, a string bow at the neck, dark purple stockings, and brown buckle shoes, adding a yellow sweater when outdoors. Akira communicates almost entirely through nonverbal means, using facial expressions, gestures, nods, head shakes, and occasional small sounds like "Umm" or "mogā" while eating. Though generally reserved, she can become physically aggressive when angered, jealous, or frightened—especially by horror content—often targeting her friend Haruo Yaguchi. She takes gaming intensely seriously and reacts strongly to mockery. While she rarely speaks on screen, there are hints that she is capable of speech. Akira escapes her oppressive home life, marked by rigorous tutoring from her strict instructor Gōda Moemi, by frequenting arcades. There she first defeats Haruo in Street Fighter II, sparking a bond over their shared passion. When her family relocates her overseas, Haruo gives her a toy ring at the airport; she embraces him tearfully and thereafter wears the ring on a necklace. Returning to Japan in middle school, she reconnects with Haruo, leading to a love triangle with Koharu Hidaka. Akira shows jealousy over their interactions, sometimes reacting violently. Her family pressures escalate, including plans for an arranged marriage after graduation. Her older sister, Makoto Ōno, supports her relationship with Haruo. In high school, facing a permanent move to Los Angeles, she loses a decisive tournament battle to Haruo, revealing her emotional vulnerability. Before departing, she mails the toy ring back to him; Haruo rushes to the airport, confesses his love, and vows to marry her, and she accepts the ring again. Akira excels at fighting games, favoring powerful characters like Zangief, Edmond Honda, and Mike Haggar. She adapts easily to new games and controllers despite lacking home consoles, using gaming as both escape and emotional expression while avoiding horror genres. Her family includes distant parents, a supportive chauffeur named Jīya, and her tutor Moemi. In the spin-off Hi Score Girl DASH, she is indirectly referenced through Koharu's recollections of their love triangle with Haruo.
