Description
Akira Ono, formally Ōno Akira, is the heir to the affluent Ōno Zaibatsu. Her appearance features long dark purple hair in anime adaptations and black hair in the manga, complemented by striking ruby-colored eyes. From elementary through high school, she consistently wears a distinctive purple dress characterized by puffy sleeves, ruffles on the chest, and a string bow at the neck. This is paired with dark purple leggings, black stockings, and brown buckle shoes, often topped with a yellow sweater when outdoors.

Akira communicates exclusively non-verbally. She conveys her thoughts and feelings through facial expressions, gestures, nods, head shakes, and occasional small vocalizations like "Umm" or the eating sound "mogā." Despite her silence, she exhibits a broad emotional range—joy, affection, anger, or jealousy—sometimes expressing these physically, such as hitting or kicking, often directed at Haruo Yaguchi. While gaming, she displays a serious and competitive demeanor, yet harbors a strong aversion to horror content, reacting with fear or aggression. Her reserved nature contrasts with moments of vulnerability, especially concerning those she cares for, like tearfully hugging Haruo after receiving his gift.

Academically and athletically accomplished, Akira excels in studies, drawing, music, and martial arts. Her home life, however, is dominated by rigorous educational schedules enforced by her strict instructor, Gōda Moemi, who restricts normal childhood activities like owning a home console or free socialization. This pressure drives Akira to seek escape in arcades, where her exceptional natural aptitude for video games shines. She masters a wide variety of arcade titles instantly, favoring powerful characters like Zangief, Edmond Honda, and Mike Haggar in fighting games for their brute strength and cyclone-like abilities. Gaming becomes her refuge.

Her relationship with Haruo Yaguchi forms a central part of her story. They meet in an arcade, bonding over their shared gaming passion. Akira develops deep feelings for him, leading to emotional moments like a planned amusement park date before her forced departure from Japan and a tearful airport farewell where Haruo gifts her a toy ring. Despite societal and familial expectations, including discussions of an arranged marriage, she commits to Haruo, eventually acknowledging him as her boyfriend and future husband. Her sister Makoto supports this relationship, while the family driver, Jīya, shows sympathy for her struggles.

Akira's journey spans ages 12–14 during the first season and 15–16 in the second season. Key events include her temporary relocation abroad under family pressure and her eventual return. In the spin-off "Hi Score Girl DASH," she is indirectly referenced through Hidaka Koharu's reflections on their past love triangle involving Haruo.
