Description
Eto is the masked, mysterious leader of the rebel forces in the fantasy anime Dragon Knight: Wheel of Time. His true identity is that of Kakeru from a ruined future timeline. Kakeru was the son of a legendary hero named Takeru and initially led a rebellion against the dark lord Lucifon, only to be defeated, watch his companions die, and be imprisoned in a dungeon for ten years. An old ally named Marlene eventually freed him and used magic to send him back in time to alter the course of history. To avoid creating a dangerous paradox, the older, future version of Kakeru conceals his face and identity behind an armored suit and adopts the alias Eto.
As an older, battle-weary warrior who has already witnessed the failure of his own quest, Eto possesses a personality that is markedly different from his younger self. He is consistently portrayed as serious, pragmatic, and resolute, carrying the heavy weight of his memories of defeat and loss. This experience makes him a more strategic and cautious leader than his youthful counterpart, though he often gives the impression of a cold or distant mentor because he cannot reveal his personal connection to the mission. His primary motivation is two-fold: to prevent the deaths of his former friends and to stop Lucifon from conquering the kingdom. He operates with the specific goal of influencing the past to create a different outcome, especially by guiding his younger self away from past mistakes.
In the story, Eto serves as the experienced leader and strategist for the new rebel army. It is his guidance that gives Kakeru and the other heroes a fighting chance against Lucifon's forces, which are led by a black mist that turns people to stone. He takes the younger Kakeru, the elf Marlene, and other companions directly into the heart of Lucifon's empire. His most crucial relationship is, of course, with his own younger self, Kakeru, who does not realize that Eto is actually an older version of himself. This unique dynamic forces Eto to act as a hidden guardian, ensuring the mission's success while being careful not to reveal his true name or history. He also has a significant connection to Marlene, who plays a key role in his time-travel mission and assists the rebellion.
Throughout the narrative, Eto undergoes a quiet but profound development as he succeeds in altering the past. By using his knowledge of the future, he manages to help defeat Lucifon, thereby preventing the dark future he once experienced. Having successfully changed history, Eto eventually reveals his true identity to his companions before returning to his own present timeline, which has now been corrected. His most notable ability is not a magical power but his advanced knowledge of future events and his strategic acumen, which he uses to outmaneuver Lucifon's plans. He also possesses the skills of a seasoned knight, including swordsmanship and leadership, and his physical disguise in an armored suit is essential for concealing his identity from his younger self.
