Description
Miyako Hoshino is a college student who lives with her mother Chizuru Hoshino and her younger sister Hinata Hoshino. She has neck-length ginger-brown hair with bangs that cover the left side of her face and red eyes, and she is usually seen wearing a burgundy tracksuit. Miyako is extremely shy, socially awkward, and self-conscious, preferring to stay at home rather than go out in public. She gets nervous easily and often avoids eye contact with strangers, and she does not consider herself attractive or care much about her appearance. Despite first impressions that might suggest she is a hikikomori or NEET, she does attend college and performs well academically. She is also a talented cook, efficient at housework, and highly skilled at sewing and making cosplay outfits. Miyako is acutely aware that she has few friends, which sometimes makes her feel depressed, especially when others pity her. Her motivation changes dramatically when her sister Hinata brings home her classmate Hana Shirosaki. Miyako becomes instantly smitten with Hana, viewing her as an angel, and begins using her homemade sweets as a way to persuade Hana to wear the cosplay costumes Miyako creates. This infatuation drives much of her actions, and she dreams of one day opening a sweets shop together with Hana. Over the course of the story, Miyako gradually opens up and steps outside her comfort zone, becoming a little braver and more willing to interact with others. Key relationships shape her growth: Hinata is very protective and clingy toward her, and while Miyako loves her sister dearly, she sometimes wishes Hinata were less clingy. Hana is initially creeped out by Miyako’s intensity but eventually begins to warm up, feeling sorry for her loneliness and accepting her friendship. Noa Himesaka, a neighbor and Hinata’s friend, becomes a good friend to Miyako and often enjoys wearing her cosplay. Miyako also forms friendships with Kanon Konomori and Koyori Tanemura, other classmates of Hinata, and she has a difficult relationship with Koko Matsumoto, a former high school classmate who developed an obsessive stalker-like fascination with her. Miyako’s mother wants her to be more sociable, and her father is rarely present. Throughout the series, including in the film Precious Friends, Miyako’s development centers on learning to overcome her social fears, forming genuine connections, and finding happiness in everyday life.
