Tanjiro Kamado, eldest son of a mountain-dwelling charcoal-selling family in the Taisho era, faces a brutal turning point when the demon Muzan Kibutsuji massacres his family, sparing only his sister Nezuko—now transformed into a demon. Driven by vengeance and the hope of restoring Nezuko’s humanity, he joins the Demon Slayer Corps.
Prior to the tragedy, Tanjiro honed skills in charcoal-making and inherited the Hinokami Kagura, a ritual dance from his father Tanjuro. This dance evolves into the Sun Breathing technique, a cornerstone of his combat prowess. Following the attack, Demon Slayer Giyu Tomioka intervenes, sparing Nezuko and guiding Tanjiro to mentor Sakonji Urokodaki. Under Urokodaki’s tutelage, he masters Water Breathing and survives the Final Selection, securing his Corps membership.
Tanjiro’s appearance features ruffled black hair with crimson tips, a flame-shaped scar from a childhood burn, and inherited hanafuda earrings. Battles leave him scarred: his chest and arms bear marks, his right eye and left arm lost in clashes with Upper Rank demons and Muzan. Temporarily transformed into a demon during the final confrontation, he reverts with allies’ help, though his right eye remains damaged and his regenerated left arm numb.
Kind-hearted yet resolute, Tanjiro balances empathy for demons’ lost humanity with unyielding justice. His compassion sparks friction with comrades Zenitsu and Inosuke, whose brashness contrasts his calm. A heightened sense of smell tracks demons and senses emotions, while strategic intellect and endurance fuel adaptive combat tactics.
Merging Water Breathing with Sun Breathing, Tanjiro wields a Nichirin sword that shifts to crimson-red when synergized with Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art. Notable victories include defeating Lower Rank Five Rui and Upper Rank Six siblings Gyutaro and Daki, culminating in Muzan’s downfall alongside allies Zenitsu and Inosuke.
Post-conflict, Tanjiro weds Kanao Tsuyuri, fathers descendants, and witnesses Nezuko’s restoration. With the Corps disbanded and demons eradicated, he embraces peace despite lasting injuries, embodying resilience and the unbroken bonds of family.
