Description
Kikyo is a major character from the 1994 anime film Lupin III: Dragon of Doom, where she plays a pivotal role in the story's central conflict. Her background is deeply intertwined with that of Goemon Ishikawa XIII, as she is revealed to be his childhood friend. When she reappears in Goemon's life, she has grown into a young woman and presents herself as an ally, there to help him on a dangerous mission.
Initially, Kikyo's personality seems loyal and dedicated. She becomes Goemon's love interest over the course of the film, and the two travel together with the goal of retrieving a small but incredibly valuable golden dragon statue. This artifact had been found by Lupin III in the remains of the RMS Titanic. Her motivations at this stage appear to be a mixture of genuine affection for Goemon and a shared sense of purpose, seemingly binding her to his cause.
However, this outward presentation is a carefully constructed deception. Kikyo’s true role in the story is that of a traitor, a mole working for the primary antagonist, a crime lord named Chin Chin Chao. Her motivations are ultimately selfish and power-hungry. In a calculated move, she fakes her own death to allay any suspicion from Goemon and his companions. Following this ruse, she steals the dragon statue and fully aligns herself with Chin Chin Chao. She then uses her knowledge to help Chao unlock the artifact's secret: it is made from a unique, incredibly strong alloy, the very same material used to forge Goemon's legendary sword, the Zantetsuken. With this discovery, Kikyo assists in the creation of an advanced, supposedly unstoppable stealth fighter aircraft for Chao.
Her key relationships are central to the plot. The most significant is her bond with Goemon. She exploits his trust and their shared history, using his feelings for her as a means to get close to the statue. The betrayal is complete when she sacrifices their connection for the promise of power and to aid Chin Chin Chao, to whom she becomes a loyal, if opportunistic, subordinate. Her actions are also tied to the legacy of her own grandfather, who was the original thief of the dragon statue and perished in the sinking of the Titanic.
Kikyo's character development is defined by this dramatic reversal. She transforms from a nostalgic figure from Goemon's past and a potential romantic partner into a treacherous adversary. In the film's climax, her plans are ultimately thwarted. Goemon, using his incredible skill, manages to slice the stealth fighter three times at the exact same spot with the Zantetsuken, compromising its integrity. Lupin then destroys the aircraft by guiding a missile into it. Kikyo perishes in the ensuing explosion, and her body falls into the ocean at the very location where the Titanic went down, meeting her end in the same watery grave as her grandfather.
In terms of notable abilities, Kikyo is a capable fighter and infiltrator. She is skilled enough to be an effective partner for Goemon in combat situations. More significantly, she is a master of manipulation and deception, as she successfully fools everyone around her until her betrayal is complete. During an infiltration of Chin Chin Chao's villa, she attempts to use seduction as a tactic to distract Goemon and steal a vital scroll, showcasing her willingness to employ any underhanded means to achieve her goals. Her actions prove her to be a determined and cunning strategist, even if her ultimate ambition leads to her downfall.
