Movie
Description
Masamune Date leads the Date clan, famously known as the "One-Eyed Dragon." He possesses medium-long brown hair and wears a black eye patch over his right eye, topped by a helmet adorned with a prominent golden crescent moon. His attire centers on an elaborate blue suit of armor. For transportation, he rides a unique horse featuring handlebars and an exhaust pipe like a motorcycle, leaning backward with arms crossed. He typically wields one katana but can employ up to six swords simultaneously in fierce combat, gripping three blades between the fingers of each hand – a technique earning the name "Dragon’s Claws."
His personality shifts dramatically between war and peace. In battle, he is energetic, fearless, and ambitious, mixing Japanese and English phrases, with mannerisms and leadership evoking a yakuza or motorcycle gang culture that influences his retainers' styles. Outside combat, he becomes quieter and more thoughtful, openly discussing strategic problems with subordinates and heavily relying on counsel from his second-in-command, Katakura Kojūrō, before major decisions, demonstrating deep loyalty and protectiveness towards his men, especially Kojūrō.
Masamune's dynamic with Yukimura Sanada is central. Beginning as fierce rivals who duel constantly to test strength, they develop mutual respect for each other's combat skill and passion. This rivalry evolves into temporary alliances against common enemies like Oda Nobunaga and later, Ishida Mitsunari, balancing intense competition with underlying camaraderie.
Within *Sengoku Basara: The Last Party*, Masamune kills Toyotomi Hideyoshi, sparking Mitsunari's vengeful campaign against him. Mitsunari infiltrates Oshu, wounds Masamune in a duel, and is dismissively challenged to return with an army. Masamune initially conceals these injuries but collapses afterward. After recovering and learning of Mitsunari's nationwide rampage, he pursues him, accepting responsibility for starting the conflict.
The film culminates at Sekigahara, where Masamune reengages Mitsunari. Retainers craft specialized armor protecting him from Mitsunari's fatal strike. As Masamune counterattacks, Tokugawa Ieyasu intercepts the blow to save Mitsunari. The resulting chaos resurrects Oda Nobunaga, forcing Masamune, Yukimura, and former foes into a temporary alliance to defeat him. Post-battle, Masamune and Mitsunari reconcile under Ieyasu's mediation. Masamune then refocuses on his enduring rivalry, agreeing to a final duel with Yukimura to settle supremacy.
His combat utilizes two distinct modes. Regular mode employs one sword for balanced speed and range. Six-sword mode, activated via special items, Basara attacks, or narrative triggers, increases damage, attack speed, and area coverage but disables guarding and evasion, adding strategic risk. This mode deactivates upon taking hits or using certain skills, though later adaptations reduce some limitations.
