Description
Haruka Nanase, born June 30th, starts as a 17-year-old high school student from Iwatobi and later attends university. He possesses an innate, profound affinity for water from childhood. At a playground, he encounters Makoto Tachibana, sparking a lifelong friendship. Makoto persuades a reluctant Haruka to join the Iwatobi Swimming Club, revealing his natural freestyle talent. In elementary school, he forms a winning relay team with Makoto, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka. A pivotal junior high moment occurs when Rin loses a private race to Haruka and quits swimming. Haruka, believing this his fault, quits competitive swimming out of guilt, damaging his relationship and breaking a racing promise with teammate Ikuya Kirishima.

Quietly determined and deeply connected to water, Haruka is reserved, rarely showing outward emotion, yet protective of close friends like Makoto. He dislikes restrictive environments and avoids unnecessary social interactions. His fixation manifests in habits like constantly wearing swim jammers under his clothes and impulsively seeking any body of water. Despite his stoic demeanor, he experiences intense internal emotions tied to swimming and relationships. His dynamic with Rin evolves from a strained rivalry rooted in mutual misunderstandings into a complex bond where each drives the other's competitive spirit. Rin's challenges reignite Haruka's passion, though Haruka often struggles to articulate motivations beyond a desire to swim freely.

In high school, Haruka revives the Iwatobi High School Swim Club with Makoto, Nagisa, and later Rei Ryugazaki. As vice-captain, he focuses solely on freestyle. External pressures—scouts' expectations and peers' assumptions about his athletic future—trigger an identity crisis. This culminates in a regional tournament breakdown where he halts mid-race, overwhelmed by the reduction of his swimming to performance metrics. He confronts the difference between swimming as intrinsic self-expression and swimming for external validation.

At Hidaka University, Haruka rejoins elite competitive swimming. He reconnects with former junior high teammates, reconciling with Ikuya by addressing their past. His focus shifts to global competitions, leading to participation in the All-Japan Invitational and international tournaments. His rivalry intensifies with world-class swimmer Albert Volandel, whose dominance becomes a psychological hurdle. Haruka fixates on defeating Albert, equating it with validating his place in competitive swimming. This obsession strains relationships, especially with Rin, culminating in physical collapse from overtraining. Hospitalized, he returns for a relay at the Fukuoka Tournament with Rin, Ikuya, and Sosuke Yamazaki. They win gold, but Haruka collapses post-race, leading to temporary retirement.

Post-retirement, Haruka briefly steps away before undergoing rehabilitation and returning to competition. His final arc sees him competing against Rin and Albert in Hungary, supported by Makoto. He reflects on a childhood time-capsule message hoping to "still be swimming" at age 20, concluding he will delay becoming "a normal person" to continue pursuing swimming. This signifies his acceptance of swimming as a lifelong identity.
