OVA
Description
Lina Inverse was born in Zephilia to a merchant family, including her parents and older sister Luna. Her mother was a former sorceress and her father a former mercenary. Developing an inferiority complex towards Luna, a Knight of Ceifeed renowned for swordsmanship, Lina dedicated herself to magic. Her parents enrolled her in the Sorcerer's Guild early on. There, she mastered basic spells and independently created devastating advanced magic, including the Giga Slave. Her first test of this spell obliterated life from an area, creating the "Bay of Death," earning Luna's wrath. Around age 13, she sold illicit projections of Luna bathing, resulting in severe punishment and her subsequent departure from home under the pretense of world exploration.

During early travels, Lina gained infamy for destroying bandit groups and confiscating their treasures, acquiring monikers like "Bandit Killer," "Dragon Spooker," and "Enemy of All Who Live." The Sorcerer's Guild also bestowed the official title "Lina the Pink," which embarrassed her. Her journeys included a partnership with the sorceress Naga the Serpent, who declared herself Lina's rival. Their dynamic featured frequent clashes over treasure, Naga's teasing about Lina's petite stature and underdeveloped physique, and collaborative bandit-hunting. Their reasons for eventual separation remain unclear, though Naga later directed Lina toward Saillune.

In the "The Book of Spells" OVA, set before the main series, Lina and Naga reunite for three escapades. "The Scary Chimera Plan" saw them confront the chimera expert Diol, who attempted to capture Lina for experimentation. He created ten Naga clones using homunculi technology; overwhelmed by her aversion to Naga's laughter and physique, Lina struggled until Naga gained control of the clones, leading to Diol's defeat. In "Jeffrey's Knighthood," they were hired by Josephine Mailstar to make her son Jeffrey appear heroic. Lina initially misunderstood the request, leading to staged bandit fights, Josephine's overprotective interventions, and comedic mishaps. "Mirror Mirror" involved pursuing a thief who stole a mirror creating personality-inverted duplicates. The mirror spawned a timid, altruistic Lina clone and a self-conscious Naga clone, contrasting sharply with their originals, with the episode resolving as the clones founded a philanthropic village.

Lina is 15 years old at the main series' start, aging to 18 by later seasons. She stands 147 cm tall with crimson eyes and a petite frame often mistaken for a boy's. Her hair color evolved from brown in early novels to red in anime adaptations. Two moles on her forehead are typically concealed by her headband. She wears practical sorceress attire, consistently featuring golden sphere earrings and a dragon-hide bandana embedded with a jewel enhancing magical focus.

Her personality blends intellectual brilliance with significant flaws. She boasts about her magical genius and beauty despite others typically perceiving her as merely cute. She exhibits greed, gluttony (justified by high magic consumption), and a volatile temper causing collateral damage. However, she holds strong moral principles: she avoids killing, protects innocents, and reveals vulnerability, particularly when a child's safety is threatened. Her fear of slugs, fishmen, and especially Luna contrasts with her otherwise fearless nature.

Magically, Lina specializes in black magic and shamanism, possessing limited white magic proficiency. Her signature destructive spells include Dragon Slave and the Giga Slave; the latter draws power from the Lord of Nightmares, risking world destruction if miscast. Acquiring the Demon Blood Talismans from Xelloss granted her the ability to use the Ragna Blade, though it drains her energy completely. Her combat skills extend to swordsmanship, and her merchant upbringing makes her a shrewd negotiator.

In later adventures, Lina partnered with the swordsman Gourry Gabriev. Their relationship evolved into mutual reliance and romantic feelings, culminating in a shared, forgotten kiss during a crisis. She allied with the chimera Zelgadiss Graywords, Princess Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune, priestess Sylphiel Nels Lahda, and the enigmatic priest Xelloss. Her conflicts involved defeating fragments of the demon lord Shabranigdu, thwarting mazoku schemes, and combating entities like Dark Star. These events showcased her growing strategic acumen and willingness to shoulder heavy responsibilities, while she maintained her characteristic impulsiveness and appetite.
