Lina Inverse was born in Zephilia to a merchant family, including her parents and older sister Luna. Her mother was a former sorceress and her father a former mercenary. Developing an inferiority complex towards Luna, a Knight of Ceifeed renowned for swordsmanship, Lina dedicated herself to magic. Her parents enrolled her in the Sorcerer's Guild early on. There, she mastered basic spells and independently created devastating advanced magic, including the Giga Slave. Her first test of this spell obliterated life from an area, creating the "Bay of Death," earning Luna's wrath. Around age 13, she sold illicit projections of Luna bathing, resulting in severe punishment and her subsequent departure from home under the pretense of world exploration.
During early travels, Lina gained infamy for destroying bandit groups and confiscating their treasures, acquiring monikers like "Bandit Killer," "Dragon Spooker," and "Enemy of All Who Live." The Sorcerer's Guild also bestowed the official title "Lina the Pink," which embarrassed her. Her journeys included a partnership with the sorceress Naga the Serpent, who declared herself Lina's rival.
