Covinhas is a self-proclaimed upper-class evil spirit, identified by the red circles on his cheeks that appear on the faces of those he possesses. He most often appears as a wispy green cloud of smoke, sometimes forming arms and rarely legs, always bearing a detailed human-like face with a prominent nose and lips. His oldest memory is of already being a spirit in a cemetery, though he remains unsure if his own grave was located there. He spent decades in this form, once leading a gang of spirits until he was nearly exorcised by Mogami. Covinhas initially pursued a goal of becoming a god worshipped by all of humanity. To this end, he founded a laughter-based cult called LOL, using hexed smile masks to force his followers into perpetual laughter. His plans were thwarted by Shigeo Kageyama, who proved immune to the hex. After being defeated and exorcised, Covinhas reformed the very next day and proposed an alliance to Shigeo, pledging to avoid trouble while secretly plotting to eventually possess him. Brash and humorous, Covinhas often addresses others with familiar nicknames. Beneath this carefree exterior lies a sharp perceptiveness, allowing him to quickly identify psychological complexes in individuals like Teruki Hanazawa’s superiority complex and Ritsu Kageyama’s inferiority complex. He also possesses extensive knowledge of psychic phenomena. Over time, his motives evolve from selfish exploitation to genuine concern. He frequently advises Shigeo on social matters, cautioning him against misunderstandings and deceptive letters. During a crisis at the Kageyama home, Covinhas showed authentic worry by searching for clues of a struggle and trying to protect Shigeo from upsetting discoveries. He used his sole chance to possess Shigeo not for domination, but for protection, even forgetting his original godhood ambitions until later reminded. Covinhas grows to respect Shigeo’s outlook, admiring the principle of hard-earned strength over psychic advantage. While possessing Musashi Gouda, he came to understand that Shigeo was right about true power. After acquiring divine abilities himself, he praised Shigeo’s humility and called him amazing for perceiving his true feelings during their confrontation in the Divine Tree Arc. He repeatedly aids Shigeo and his allies across numerous events. He was almost obliterated by Teruki Hanazawa while defending Shigeo. He collaborated with Ritsu Kageyama after inadvertently being allowed into the Kageyama household. He joined missions against the organization Claw, possessing a security guard and later defeating a Claw member after being captured. He also possessed Banshomaru Shinra to fight a spirit called The Dragger. In a critical encounter with the formidable spirit Mogami, Covinhas immediately recognized the danger and urged Shigeo to escape, recalling his own near-destruction at Mogami’s hands. At Shigeo’s request, he possessed Shigeo’s body to safeguard it during a spiritual confrontation. When Shigeo appeared defeated within Mogami’s mental world, Covinhas first considered retreating but was convinced to assist; he entered the mindscape to rouse Shigeo from his trance, making victory possible. Covinhas continued to observe Shigeo’s life, noting his improved relationships and moments of contentment. He also interacted with Arataka Reigen, such as finding him in hiding and offering commentary on events. Following the world domination arc involving Claw, Covinhas maintained his association with Spirits and Such Consultation office. He joined a company trip to hot springs with Reigen, Shigeo, Ritsu, and Katsuya Serizawa. On the train ride, Reigen and Serizawa fell asleep and were transported to a parallel world, leaving them separated from the group that included Covinhas.
