Description
Ryo Yamada (山田 リョウ) is a second-year student at Shimokitazawa High School. She serves as the bassist, backup vocalist, and primary composer for Kessoku Band. Her surname references Takahiro Yamada of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and her birthday, September 18, reverses his August 19 date.
Ryo sports short blue hair, yellow eyes, and a mole on her left cheek, with two black square hair clips securing the right side of her bangs. Her typical outfit is a Japanese high school uniform: a collared white shirt with a black ribbon, a dark blue pleated skirt, black leggings, maroon or brown loafers, and a matching long-sleeved sweater.
Despite her outwardly cool, expressionless, and androgynous demeanor—which sometimes attracts female admirers, like Ikuyo Kita's initial crush—Ryo possesses an eccentric personality. She takes pride in being called a "weirdo," displays a mischievous sense of humor, and is often tactless socially. Preferring solitude, she has few friends and frequently invents excuses to avoid activities, though her best friend Nijika Ijichi consistently sees through them. Ryo becomes highly talkative and displays encyclopedic knowledge when discussing her deep interests, though this focus can lead to inconsistencies, like forgetting musical concepts while studying for exams.
Financially irresponsible, Ryo comes from a wealthy family running a hospital but spends her entire allowance on musical instruments, leaving her destitute and sometimes eating weeds to stave off hunger. She began playing rock music at age ten to distance herself from her overbearing parents. Before Kessoku Band, she was in another band, The Hamukitasu (later misromanized as The Hamukitada), which disbanded due to creative differences.
In Kessoku Band, Ryo plays an Olympic White Fender Precision Bass and uses an MXR M80 Bass D.I.+. She named the band—a pun on "zip tie" (kessoku) symbolizing unity—and gave Hitori Gotoh the nickname "Bocchi" (from "hitoribocchi," meaning "lonely"). As the primary composer, she encourages Bocchi to write authentic lyrics reflecting her true self rather than pandering to audiences, drawing from her past band experiences. Her creative process involves periods of writer's block, during which she skips school and work until inspired by her bandmates.
Key interactions include comforting Bocchi after a poor practice session, impulsively buying a six-string bass and lending Kita a guitar (worsening her finances), and skipping café bills due to lack of funds. She admires the band SICK HACK, particularly Kikuri Hiroi's performances, and claims interests in techno kayo and Saudi Arabian hit charts—though Nijika suspects the latter is a lie. Her other hobbies include thrifting for clothes, and her favorite manga is a copyright-avoidant variant of Jujutsu Kaisen.
