Description
Kōhei Nikaidō serves as a Private First Class in the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army alongside his twin brother, Youhei Nikaidō. Both participated in the 1905 Battle of Mukden, transporting wounded soldiers like Tokushirou Tsurumi and Hajime Tsukishima across frozen terrain using sledges provided by Saichi Sugimoto.
Physically identical to his twin, Kōhei possesses a thin, pointed nose, short black hair, and completely black irises. He lacks both ears: one torn off by a bear, the other surgically removed by Lieutenant Tsurumi. He initially wore his severed ear on a string around his neck until taxidermist Yasaku Edogai crafted a human skin headpiece incorporating the ear, covering most of his head with openings where his ears were. Subsequent injuries include the loss of his right leg to Toshizō Hijikata during a fight at Edogai's shop and the loss of his right hand to Sugimoto during the assault on Abashiri Prison. Engineer Narizou Arisaka provided prosthetics: a leg doubling as a three-shell shotgun and a hand with a hidden chopstick compartment in one finger; the hand's mundane utility disappointed him.
Kōhei exhibits significant psychological instability, frequently ignoring orders and displaying a propensity for inflicting pain. This instability intensified after Sugimoto killed Youhei during an unauthorized prison confrontation, leaving Kōhei singularly obsessed with avenging his brother. He often ignores tactics when encountering Sugimoto and dissociates from his lost body parts, referring to them as Youhei's. His mental state deteriorated further upon falsely learning of Sugimoto's death, leading to severe depression marked by refusing to leave bed or eat. He developed a morphine addiction, stealing bottles and showing heightened responsiveness to its mention.
Key events include Kōhei and Youhei first encountering Sugimoto in a soba restaurant during the Escape King Arc, attempting his capture under Tsurumi's orders. After Youhei's death, Kōhei participated in staking out a grave in Yubari to catch Edogai, inadvertently alerting him. He later infiltrated Edogai's home, leading to Edogai's recruitment. Kōhei returned to Yubari to destroy evidence by burning Edogai's shop, whispering to his preserved ear about erasing everything; this confrontation with Hijikata and Sugimoto resulted in his leg amputation.
During recovery in an Otaru hospital, he required restraints due to frequent morphine theft attempts. Tsurumi's reprimands deepened his depression, though Arisaka's weaponized prosthetic leg temporarily lifted his spirits. After losing his hand at Abashiri Prison and learning of Sugimoto's supposed death, he withdrew completely, rejecting food and showing only fleeting interest in his new hand before reverting to despondency. He later appeared at a Noboribetsu hot spring, dismissing a comrade's supernatural story as a sign of softened minds.
Kōhei's equipment includes a Type 26 Revolver and his specialized prosthetics. He is known to favor Mandarin oranges.
