ONA
Description
Kirie is the main protagonist and a pilot of the Kotobuki squadron, having joined shortly before another pilot named Chika. She is an orphan from the town of Ramaha and grew up in an orphanage alongside her childhood friends, Reona and Emma. As a child, she showed a persistent curiosity about the Yufang, mysterious beings who arrive through interdimensional portals. This led her to follow Old Sabu, the last known Yufang in the region of Ijitsu. After finding him collapsed near Mount Shio, she helped him and eventually convinced him to teach her how to fly. Their bond was broken when a stranger threatened Old Sabu. To protect her, he denied knowing her, destroyed his home, and fled. Kirie later built a small memorial at the site, which she regularly visits to ask for his blessing.
Kirie has a hot-headed and impulsive personality, often clashing with other strong-willed individuals like her squadron mate Chika, though these conflicts are presented as a primary form of camaraderie. She is competitive and hates to lose, but does not hold unreasonable grudges over minor setbacks. Her cheerful and playful side emerges when she engages in mock fights with children, and she possesses a deep loyalty to her friends and fellow squadron members. Pancakes have an immediate uplifting effect on her mood. She is generally accessible, though she will only listen to Reona during intense emotional outbursts. Despite being of legal age, she does not like alcohol.
Her primary motivation as a pilot stems from a childhood fascination with the world beyond the Yufang portals, an ambition that she temporarily lost sight of as she grew older before later experiences rekindled it. Kirie possesses exceptional flying skills, particularly in acrobatics and instinctive combat, though she lacks theoretical knowledge of aircraft mechanics. Unusually for a native of Ijitsu, she is able to recognize advanced machinery such as tanks and aircraft carriers. She typically flies a red Hayabusa fighter decorated with a distinctive red falcon tail art, operating in the vanguard in two-pilot formations.
Kirie has short black hair, brown eyes, and a medium build. Her typical attire consists of a red overcoat and frilled shorts. When flying, she wears a brown aviator cap with goggles. A blue scarf, a gift from Reona, distinguishes her from other squadron members. As a child, she wore a red dress and brown sandals.
Reona provides a stabilizing influence on Kirie, as they have known each other since childhood. Kirie wears Reonas scarf as a symbol of their bond and consistently follows her orders. Emma, her oldest friend, remains a trusted confidante, and Kiries decision to defend Rahama was partly born from loyalty to Emmas passionate ideals. She initially had a bitter rivalry with another pilot named Naomi, which evolved into an alliance after they discovered their shared connection to Old Sabu as his students.
In the Gaiden spin-off, Kirie visits the Kaichi restaurant for pancakes and accidentally reveals her identity when the Harukaze squadron discusses imitating Kotobuki. She initially denies who she is, but Chikas arrival confirms it. They argue because Kirie went alone to eat without them, but eventually perform a sketch together to demonstrate teamwork despite their differences, after which they flee together to avoid Reonas scolding. Kirie does not know what a swimsuit is and cannot swim. Up until a certain episode, she had never seen a fish.
