Description
Isabella, known to the children of Grace Field House as Mama, is a central figure in the story. She serves as the caretaker of Plantation 3, a seemingly idyllic orphanage, and is the primary antagonist of the first major story arc. Her role is that of a warden disguised as a loving parent, responsible for raising the children to the highest possible standard before they are shipped off as food for demons.

Isabella was not born into this role but was once an orphan at a Grace Field plantation herself. As a child, she was an optimistic and free-spirited girl who shared a deep bond with another boy named Leslie, for whom she developed strong feelings. Leslie wrote a song on his lute that would become deeply meaningful to her. Her innocence shattered when Leslie was shipped out and killed upon turning twelve. Devastated, Isabella attempted to escape the plantation by climbing the wall, only to discover a large chasm on the other side, which crushed her hopes. She was caught by the Mama of her orphanage and given an ultimatum: be shipped out to her death or train to become a Mama herself. Choosing to live to honor Leslie's memory, she became the youngest person ever selected for this role. As part of her training and to test her suitability, she was artificially impregnated. Throughout her pregnancy, she would sing Leslie's song to her unborn child. After giving birth, the baby was taken from her, and she was assigned as the Mama of Grace Field House Plantation 3.

In her position as Mama, Isabella projects a persona of a kind, selfless, and devoted mother. She is always seen in her black dress and apron, caring for the children with a warm smile, tucking them into bed, and encouraging their studies. This facade, however, conceals a sharp-witted, ruthless, and deeply manipulative nature. Isabella is calculating and always thinks several steps ahead, making her a formidable opponent to any child who uncovers the truth. She is capable of switching instantly from a gentle caretaker to a cold and threatening adversary, willing to physically harm the children to maintain control, most notably when she violently breaks Emma's leg to prevent an escape. Her intelligence is one of her greatest assets; she is observant, an adept strategist comparable to the most gifted children, and skilled at psychological warfare.

Her core motivation is survival. Having seen the hopelessness of escape in her youth, she believes the only way to live is to work within the system. She operates on a pragmatic, albeit twisted, philosophy: to give the children a few years of genuine happiness and love before their inevitable fate, an approach she sees as merciful compared to the despair of a failed escape. However, beneath her cold exterior lies a genuine, complex love for the children, especially her biological son, Ray. She recognized Ray was her child when she heard him humming Leslie's song. Because Ray understood the plantation's true nature, she made a secret pact with him, allowing him to act as her spy in exchange for small privileges. Her feelings for Ray are a source of profound internal pain, as she must raise him knowing he will eventually be killed. The same applies to all the children; she does love them, but her love is expressed through her desire to give them a happy childhood within their prison rather than true freedom.

Throughout the children's escape attempt, Isabella is the primary obstacle. She is tipped off by her spy, Ray, about Emma and Norman's discovery of the plantation's secret. She subtly discourages them by revealing the existence of tracking devices and brings in Sister Krone to help monitor them. Using information from Ray, she consistently outmaneuvers the children's plans, ultimately cornering Emma and Norman at the wall, shipping Norman out, and breaking Emma's spirit by shattering her leg. Her development is marked by her eventual defeat. When Emma, Ray, and the other children finally manage to escape, Isabella experiences a profound shift. Instead of rage, she accepts her loss, acknowledging that Emma succeeded where she herself had failed as a child. She cuts the ropes to help cover their escape and wishes them well, revealing that deep down, she always hoped someone would break the cycle.

Later, she is promoted to Grandmother of the farms. While this appears to be a continuation of her role, she secretly uses her new position to orchestrate a betrayal against the demons and the system that enslaved her, ultimately aiding the escaped children in their final fight. In her final moments, she sacrifices herself to protect them, atoning for her past actions. Her notable abilities are her genius-level intellect, strategic thinking, and enhanced physical strength that belies her human frame. She also possesses a hauntingly beautiful singing voice, using Leslie's song as a lullaby for the children, a melody that represents both her lost love and her enduring, tragic humanity.
